I want to be left alone.
But the fae king only knows loneliness.
And he needs me to save him from it.
Neremin Eilreine, the dragon fae king of Cardell, has lived almost one-hundred years without a fateful companion. He serves his duty well, but he doesn’t have anybody to understand him. He believes he can’t find someone like that, although it’s his heart’s deepest longing.
A foretelling from a special orb draws Neremin to the dryad forest. He needs to subdue the undead coming alive from a range of mountains. During his travels, Neremin mysteriously loses his magic—the one thing that makes him revered. He finds himself trapped with Alyxe Bellquaine, a dragon fae recluse who has been in hiding for the last twenty-five years.
Alyxe draws him with her strength and straightforward attitude. She’s capable, having built a life in the dryad forest all alone.
But Alyxe won’t return with him to the dragon fae homeland. She wants nothing to do with it. An accident twenty-five years ago resulted in her killing all her friends.
Alyxe would rather die than face the consequences of her actions.
But Neremin will not let himself be separated from her.

There was no overlooking how weak Alxyes character appeared to be though she is supposed to be a "fierce warrior". She seemed cool to begin with but as time went on it just felt more and more to be some bark, little to no bite 🤷. Maybe that's the real reason why her bff druid leader lady says she is too soft hearted? (strange how often she is described as cowardly as well) At some point we are made aware that she was never great with magic (the super random/ rare chaos thing happen to her twice in 25 years 😳) however that doesn't pertain to Alxye's lack of other abilities. ☝On the contrary, she lets on to being good at what she does despite not using magic as the sole protector of the druids even with all the traumas she endured. Alxye could have made it through training with a bit more than "warrior skill" I suppose. She is pretty, never said who she "did it" with before Neremin, mentioned a crush on teach 😋 and surely her family was wealthy enough to pay for the grade if all else failed. It may not be a stretch to say she more easily overlooks lover boys ego due to her own tendency to over-exaggerate personal proficiency. She is described as being a strict teacher in the end which would go along well with the old saying “He who can does; he who cannot, teaches.”. Main saving grace of the story was humor for me, that and the drawings of course👏. There is nothing funny about the ending though...😅
