The Tattered Bride was about Victoria "Tori" Sparrow and Logan Doherty. Victoria, a woman with a lot of emotional baggage, finally found acceptance in her fiance, Logan, a man who "gives her reason to believe in goodness and true love", and she found herself finally able to trust him to give him her heart. After having spent the morning in bed together, Logan and Victoria went their separate ways, each to prepare for their wedding that was a mere four hours away. However, once at the altar, Logan told her he couldn't go through with the wedding. He was sorry...he just couldn't get married. He couldn't tell her why...just that she needed to calm down and that "we'll get through this". After trying to pull herself together, Victoria went into the main area where everyone was waiting for the ceremony to begin...and told them she was sorry they had to wait, and that the wedding was off. Then she walked out and her mother took her home. But that wasn't the end of it. Logan's mother called to talk to her, to tell her something, but she refused to take the call. Then she learned that Logan had called all of her family and friends looking for her...even calling her own cell phone and her boss at work. At that point, Victoria changed her phone number. Using her pain to further her work, Victoria took the "tattered bride" idea and ran with it for an advertisement. With both her and Jon, her boss, working through the night and into the wee hours of the morning, they were determined to perfect her idea. Once they had things laid out the way they wanted, both Jon and Victoria went for their separate appointments, Jon to his date and Victoria to her sister's home to spend much-needed downtime with her family, who all rallied around her in support. Logan haunted her home and kept up the attempts to get Victoria's family to tell him where she was or how he could get in touch with her. She hadn't been back to her home since the wedding debacle...and her family refused to help him in any way, with all of them forming a protective hedge around her. He knew he had a long way to go to regain her trust...if that was even possible. He left her a note at her apartment, asking for her understanding and to trust him...if she could. Logan refused to give up on her...even though he was the one to call off the wedding. No matter how many times her friends, family, and boss told her that Logan was trying to get in touch with her, Tori was just as determined to cut him out of her life...and for them to stop pushing her to talk with him. She was submerging herself in her work and trying not to focus on the hurt he had caused her, and she believed if she didn't focus on him, then he couldn't hurt her more than he already had. She didn't think she could survive another rejection if she gave in to him and he was to fail her yet again. When her boss offered her an idea for "getting away from it all", Tori grasped the opportunity with both hands...and left the following day after clearing out her home. When Logan went to her place to try talking with her yet again, he noticed the missing items, the refrigerator being empty...and knew she was gone. He called her mother to see if he could get more information, but once again he was told nothing helpful except "But I fear it’s too late,"...which scared the sh*t out of him, for "he’d destroyed a piece of his woman, and she might not recognize him anymore. He might not know her.". Nearly a month had passed since the wedding had failed to take place and Victoria, who had moved from the west coast to the east coast to get away from everything, saw the news about Logan and his family. Deciding to "bite the bullet" and look up what was going on, she did an internet search, learning that Logan had pulled a company "coup" and ousted his father as the head of the family company. While reading the news to get as much info as she could...which wasn't a great deal...she also saw pictures of Logan with another woman, Adrienne Parker. Recalling that the woman had joined the family firm only three months prior to the failed wedding...and seeing the "adoring looks" Adrienne gave Logan in the photos...Tori believed she finally knew why he had called a halt to their marriage. She believed he had found another love in Adrienne. She believed she, Tori, had not been enough for Logan, so he had found someone else...and Tori's imagination ran, unrestrained, with various scenarios as to what had led up to him canceling the wedding...whether they were true or not. Her mother chose to visit her for a couple of days, but just as she was taking her back to the airport for her trip home, the woman brought up Logan again...and it hurt that her mother kept pushing her to give him another chance. When she shut her mother down, she hurt her in return. When she arrived back at her apartment, the security guard let her know she had a visitor in the lobby. Since she hadn't been expecting anyone, she was curious as to who it could be...only to drop her bags of groceries when, in shock and dismay, she saw Logan standing there. Rushing to get away from him, he begged her to wait, but the security guard stopped him when he realized he was not someone Victoria wanted to see. When there was a knock later at her door, she refused to answer until she realized it was the security guard. Opening for him, she saw he had her bags of groceries and heard him tell her that Logan was gone after a scuffle occurred between the two men...and the guard said Logan might have had to make a trip to the ER afterward since he took a couple of punches to the ribs and kidney. Oddly enough, it was another security guard who said something that made Victoria decide to let Logan plead his case. Emilio said, “If you chose him and you say he is all those good things, then the reason was something he couldn’t tell you...there are times when a man cannot share. At least not right away. Maybe never...Sometimes it is in the best interest of others to keep certain things to oneself. I might have withheld from my wife on occasion, as well.” Emilio's words...and her later consideration of the situation...started a little bloom of hope to sprout in her heart. With her decision made, she wasn't certain how to let Logan know. She thought about calling him, but threw that idea out and made her way down to the lobby. Letting the security guard know she'd be alright going out on her own, she stood by the door...waiting. She knew Logan wouldn't be far away and would make his way to her side...which he did. Rather than inviting him to her apartment, they went to a nearby coffee shop to talk. The storyline and plot were a little unique for a romance novel, though the drama and angst were off the charts high and the rollercoaster ride with the twists and turns was absolutely mindboggling. The only time the two main characters were together was immediately before and after the wedding. Other than that, there was no contact at all between them, which was another unusual move for a romance novel. Victoria's character was definitely one of great strength and backbone, even though she was emotionally scarred. She had been through a great deal in her life, and she had learned the hard way how to deal with rejection after rejection. She didn't break down or throw a tantrum. She wasn't immature or disdainful. She "pulled up her big girl panties" and got on with the business of living...even if it hurt to do so. Logan's character was one that gave the reader pause for thought. He wasn't too prominent in the book, especially since he was the main male character. The author didn't focus a whole lot on his perspective or the things he was going through. Most of the book focused on Victoria and how she handled being spurned at the altar. But Logan, what we saw of him, that is, was definitely a mature character. He just seemed to have a great many flaws. The emotions of the book were more angsty and negative than positive, mainly because they were the emotions emanating from Victoria. Since the relationship wasn't prominent in the story, there wasn't much passion or even chemistry to comment on. Logan and Victoria were only together for three very short scenes, then it was turned back to Victoria and her family. It was quite a bit lopsided for a romance novel. It was also disappointing that Victoria forgave him so damned fast. He may have suffered for three weeks, but dammit, HE was the one who caused all the heartache! It was HIS choice to call off the wedding...and to do it so publicly that he humiliated her in front of all their friends and family. He deserved to stew longer than he did. I can't say I understood the whole scenario that put Logan into the position that forced him to call a halt to the wedding. It seemed ill-suited for a modern-day novel and made little sense in the long run. The whole thing seemed more suited for a regency-era book and just created more questions than it had answers for. The author had it right when one of the characters stated it was Machiavellian. Once again, the ending was a bit off, almost as if it was cut right in the middle of a sentence and left dangling with nowhere to go. If it had ended better, the book might have earned a five-star rating, but it was such a disappointment that it subtracted two stars and kept the novel from being added to the Keeper for the Shelves collection.
