The Sicilian’s Banished Bride was about Rocco Vitelli and Mia Gallagher. A little more than three years before, Rocco believed that Mia had betrayed him, and banished her from his life. Three years later and an urgent request from his grandmother sent him flying across the world in search of...something. When he arrived at his destination in England, he was shocked to find Mia on the other side of the door on which he had knocked. Suddenly believing she had set things in motion to betray him further, he demanded immediate access to her child, who looked just like him when he was a toddler. Further horrifying news was to be delivered to Rocco from Mia that shook his world as he knew it. However, once he had confirmation that Mia's son was his, Rocco turned out to be just what all of the old Harlequin "Heroes" turned out to be...controlling, arrogant, bullies, rich enough to twist and manipulate the Heroine of the story to do whatever the hell he wanted, regardless of her feelings or what she wanted. It was bad enough to make me want to just stop reading before the end of Chapter 5. He was even ruthless enough to hide the truth of what had driven them apart and everything that had occurred in the intervening three years they were apart, even though he knew the information he had learned was all Mia was waiting for. But after Mia found out, it was devastating to watch Rocco fall apart at the thought of losing her...again. This was a heartrending story of love and betrayal, broken families, and desperation for justice. So much angst and drama were poured into these few, short chapters that it was almost too much. There was not one iota of humor to ease the tension that ran rampant throughout the pages. Though there was passion, there really wasn't much chemistry between Rocco and Mia, so whatever brought them together, it didn't feel like love. It felt more like lust that had not abated with their separation. The twists and turns of the story were definitely a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs that made the reader dizzy trying to figure out what was going on...and yet...the villain(ness)s were easy to figure out, so the plot wasn't really that complicated to figure out. But at the same time, it was a bit of a bland story that has been overdone a million times by just as many authors. It soon became boring, and the ending did nothing to alleviate that boredom. Nice story? Sure. Bland? Definitely. Was it five-star worthy? Not a chance. It was too much like all the rest of the old-school Harlequin books to earn that right of passage.
