Reece Lassiter was a ruthless bastard.

He had everything a wolf shifter could want. He even had the perfect mate. Jolie was the only woman he’d ever trusted. The only woman he’d ever loved. She had been his everything. Until the day she had betrayed his trust and eviscerated his soul. Reece had cut her out of his life with a ruthlessness that shocked even him. He had encased his broken heart in ice so thick and glacial that nothing could ever penetrate it again.

And he’d been wrong.

His mate had not betrayed him. He had betrayed her and destroyed them both in the process. Now he’ll stop at nothing to get her and their cub back. But his ex-wife is not the same woman that he remembered. His sunshine girl had been a creature of sweetness and light, not this hissing, vitriol filled she-cat who wanted to claw his eyes out. Reece might be an unstoppable force, but Jolie had become an unmovable object.

Is the big bad wolf strong enough to reclaim her heart?

The Big Bad Wolf’s Ex, Book 1 of the Mating Mayhem series, was about Reece Lassiter, the Alpha wolf shifter, and his human ex-wife, Jolie Lassiter. A good portion of this story was off-page and before the story takes place. Yes, even before the prologue. Reece and Jolie met five years before the events of the story, and the rest of the events took place four years before the prologue. Jolie had told Reece that she was pregnant, thinking he would be just as overjoyed about it as she was. However, unknown to her, her husband had a vasectomy many years before he had ever met her, therefore he accused her of betraying him by having a lover and trying to pass off that man's "bstrd" as his. He not only tossed her out, but he had her escorted out by the police, with nothing more than the clothes on her back, without shoes on her feet, and penniless with nowhere to go. He swore he would do violence to anyone who dared mention her name. However, his younger brother Dane, kept a close eye on her, for he believed the baby would be his nephew and that his brother would live to regret his actions. True to Dane's warning, four years after divorcing his wife, Reece was confronted with another woman claiming to be pregnant with his child. However, although he knew he had never slept with her, he determined to visit his doctor and see if the vasectomy had somehow reversed itself. After having the tests done, Reece received a phone call confirming that he was, in fact, able to father a child. Crushed with the knowledge that he had destroyed his marriage, his (now ex) wife, and any possible relationship with her or his son, he called his brother and demanded to know where he could find his family. But before he would tell Reece anything he wanted to know, Dane demanded a few promises from him first. He told his brother that he would only divulge the information if Reese would swear to never take his son away from his mother and to swear that he would never again hurt Jolie. If he refused to make those promises, Dane said he would not tell him anything at all; he reluctantly agreed. Jolie, after having been cast out of her home, literally barefoot and pregnant, had been taken by the police to a homeless shelter. She slowly rebuilt her life, though it was nowhere near as good as the life she'd had either before or after her marriage. She had taken a job at a convenience store, but circumstances caused her to lose that job. When Reese found both her and his son living in virtual squalor and abject poverty, his remorse and self-loathing were obvious. But when he realized that, not only was she living in a building that was falling apart and should have been condemned, but the only job she was able to get was as a stripper, he refused to leave them living in that hellhole. Since the story was so short (a mere nine chapters), I won't go into too great detail in this review. I will say that the angst was off the charts, as was the drama. It had all the emotions of a full-length novel, including heartbreak, anger, fear, sadness, joy, love, humor, and passion. It wasn't a high spice, but then again, it was a very short story, so I can accept that area being a bit lacking. The characters were well-rounded, fleshed out, and mature. Reese was definitely an Alpha, but the grovel he did was epic, from the very beginning to the very end of the story. Jolie was not the typical Harlequin heroine. This chick had a backbone and she never let up on Reese. She made that man just about eat dirt, she was that strong of a character. Boy did she make him pay for everything he had dished out in the past, as well as the present. Short novellas are not always worthy of a high rating. However, this one did earn a four-star rating. I would have given it five stars, but it had some grammatical errors that knocked it down to the four I gave it. However, I will be adding it to my Keeper for the Shelves collection. I really enjoyed this story.
