Lady Gwyn Drake has long protected her family’s reputation by hiding an imprudent affair from her youth. But when her former suitor appears at Armitage Hall, manhandling the heiress and threatening to go public with her secrets, it’s Gwyn who needs protecting. Her twin brother, Thorn, hires Joshua Wolfe, the estate’s gamekeeper, to keep her safe in London during her debut. As a war hero, Joshua feels obligated to fulfill the assignment he has accepted. But as a man, it’s torment to be so very close to the beauty he’s fought to ignore . . .

With handsome Joshua monitoring her every move, Gwyn would prefer to forget both the past and the parade of money-seeking bachelors at her coming out. But Joshua is unmoved by her attempts at flirtation, and the threat of blackmail still hangs over her. With danger closing in, Gwyn must decide which is the greater risk: deflecting a scoundrel’s attempts to sabotage her—or revealing her whole heart to the rugged bodyguard she can’t resist . . .

The Bachelor, Book 2 of the Duke Dynasty series, was about Lady Gwyn Drake, sister to His Grace Marlowe Drake, the Duke of Thornstock, and Major Joshua Wolfe, the Duke of Armitage's gamekeeper. Terrified that the former Ensign Lionel Malet's blackmail attempts might ruin her and her family should he reveal her past secrets to the public, she met him in order to make arrangements to pay his blackmail demands. However, what Mr. Malet was unaware of was the meeting place he chose was in front of Joshua's house. When he got a little too rough with Gwyn, Joshua showed up and fired a gun at him. Hoping to keep the incident from her brothers, Gwyn begged the Major to not say anything about what had occurred, which he declined in order to protect her. Side Note: The more I read this author's books, the more disappointed I get that she doesn't seem to bother with researching history in order to accurately depict historical things. Once again, she speaks of a Duke who had been an "Ambassador" to Prussia for 30 years. However, the year of the book was 1809, but the first British Ambassador didn't go to Prussia until 1817, and his name was the Honorable Frederick Lamb. Before that, there were no "Ambassadors" as an embassy had not yet been created, let alone someone having served for the previous 30 YEARS in such a role. Plus the language of the entire series so far has been more of what one would find from the 1980s and NOT the 1880s. It was also very rare, if at all, for a woman to have her debut in Society at the age of 30. Normally that took place between the ages of 6-18 unless there had been a death in the family that delayed it for a year or two, but definitely well before the age of 30. By then, the woman was no longer considered a debutante. There was definitely way too much fluff in this book. It meandered more than it needed to, with so much detail about irrelevant situations, thoughts, and issues that really didn't pertain to the story. It just threw in things that didn't matter which is why this story was so much longer than the others. It could have ended 4-5 + chapters before it did. By the time Chapter 7 floated by, I was ready to drop it and go to a different book altogether. The emotions ran the gamut in this story. The angst, drama, and intrigue were very high and kept the reader wondering what would happen next. The passion and chemistry were more muted than expected for a romance novel but decidedly scintillating. The intrigue was well done enough the book could have been categorized as a mystery as well as a historical romance. The book, while a good story, still did not earn a five-star rating.
