Stealing My Ex, Book 1 of The Ex series, was about 32-year-old Callie Campbell, a stay-at-home mother of three small children, and 32-year-old Justin Campbell, her cheating ex-husband.
This book was told from an unusual dual POV. Usually, the reader would get the POV of the FMC and the MMC, but that wasn't the case here. Most of the book was told from the FMC's POV, but four chapters near the end were told from the other woman's POV. The reader never got to see the story from the MMC's POV. Well...we did get his side of the story, but it wasn't until the book ended.
After 10 years of marriage and three children under the age of five, Callie and her husband, Justin divorced because he had a two-year-long affair with a 24-year-old co-worker (AKA his "work wife"). During that time, Callie began working on herself by getting back into shape, returning to school for some "refresher courses", and reconnecting with friends who had fallen by the wayside after she married Justin. During that time, she kept her mouth shut, never letting on to her cheating husband that she knew, or that she was taking steps to protect herself and her kids. She also collected evidence of his affair so that, when she handed him the divorce papers, she had verifiable proof of his unfaithfulness.
Eight months after the divorce was finalized, from which Callie kept the house, and was given alimony and child support, she learned that Justin was no longer happy with his affair partner. Her ex didn't know that she was out for revenge...and her getting into shape was part of her plan. When he noticed the changes and got the hints of "another man" in her life, it sent her ex over the edge and they ended up having a spicy scene while the kids slept. Thus began her time as her ex-husband's mistress, because he was still with his co-worker he'd cheated with. During the time they were sneaking around, Callie deliberately forgot to take her birth control.
I honestly wasn't ever going to read this book. In fact, I had it marked as "not interested in reading" on my bookshelves because I just can't stand reading about a cheating spouse/partner. But something about this book pulled me in, so I caved...and I'm glad I did because this wasn't your usual story about cheating. That happened off-page, so nothing was ever read about it other than talk. But then again, this wasn't about the cheating so much as it was about the revenge the FMC set out to attain...and oh man did she ever!
While there was plenty of angst, there was more drama that was enjoyable to read. Seeing the cheaters get what they deserved was fun, but reading about how the FMC won her cheating hubby back without ever becoming a doormat who gave in to histrionics and betraying body syndrome. She knew what she wanted, planned it all out, and went after it with the determination most heroines lack in such stories.
What I didn't enjoy was how she kept putting the MMC down and name-calling...even if it was to herself and not actually saying it to his face. If she truly felt that way about him, why was she so determined to get him back?
Both main characters were fully developed, mature, and with plenty of room for growth, with most of that needing to be done by the MMC since the FMC did all of her necessary growing off-page before the book began. However, it was great to see how her revenge played out, and those two late-in-the-story plot twists at the end of the book were priceless.
I ended up giving this story a five-star rating, shockingly enough for a "cheater" romance. However, that ending was everything a reader of "revenge plot" books could ask or hope for. So I also will be adding this to my Keeper for the Shelves collection.
