Ruin Me Properly was about Lady Victoria "Vicky" Fitzpatrick, daughter of Lord James Fitzpatrick, Earl of Whitmore, and His Grace Marcus Jamison, the Duke of Ashford aka "That Duke". Side Note: Don't waste your time with this book. On top of it being a horribly written novel, the book included three of the many pet peeves I have appeared throughout. First, the author tended to change tenses quite frequently, much to my irritation. If one was purported to be an author, surely one would know that you do NOT switch from present to past tense. It is quite irritating to the one doing the reading. Second, the grammatical errors were just as atrocious. It's as though the author didn't even bother with either hiring a proofreader or doing it herself. Third, the author used misnomers for her characters. For instance, Victoria, being the eldest daughter of an earl should never be addressed as "Miss" then her name. She should be addressed as "Lady" and then her name, as in Lady Victoria...not Miss Victoria. She also used Ms. Victoria...however Ms. was never used in the 1800s. Victoria didn't want to marry...ever. She just wanted to write books about plants and their medicinal value and to create medicines to assist people in their health. However, her parents were determined she find a husband or they would force her to marry a man old enough to be her grandfather. So determined was she to not marry that she came up with a plan to avoid it at all cost...find a rogue to ruin her. Marcus, known for his debauchery and tendency to ruin any female who caught his eyes, found himself unexpectedly drawn to Victoria. She was different from any other debutante, widow, or any other woman he had ever met. When she told him of her plan, he readily agreed. However, things did not go the way they had expected them to. When they were caught in a compromising situation, Marcus offered to marry her. Again, things did not go as planned. When secrets from the past emerged, both Marcus' and Victoria's, things started steamrolling out of control. Enemies, dark secrets, reputations, and past loves came out of the woodwork, all threatening to ruin things between Marcus and Victoria. This was a most unusual book. The storyline was odd from the beginning and stayed that way until the end. The drama and angst were at times too much while at other times perhaps not quite enough. However, the characters left much to be desired. They were both somewhat out of place for the era in which this book was supposed to take place. The female character was definitely not your typical historical heroine. She was too modern, too outspoken, too liberal for the victorian age. The main male character was...a wimp in so many ways and acted so childishly throughout the story. He definitely was not what one would expect from a ducal character. There was just too much wrong with this book, some of it I won't divulge for it would just seem preposterous that an author would add certain things to what was supposed to be a historical romance novel. One would think that the author just did not know where to go with such a story and just went wild and threw something together that she thought would make sense. There were many outrageous things in this book that didn't fit together. It was definitely NOT worthy of even a two-star rating, it was THAT bad. To put it mildly, the book was full of nothing but nonsense. It was NOT worth the time it took to read it.
