A new town. A new identity. Pregnant and alone.
And far away from a past that can never find me.
River Wild.
Moody. Sullen. Asshole.
And my new neighbor.
I have no interest in befriending River. And he definitely doesn’t want to be befriended by me.
Then, he helps me rescue an abandoned dog. And, that day, I see something in his eyes that reflects back in my own. Sadness. Pain. Loneliness.
I know all of those things well.
An unwanted and unexpected friendship that somehow works. Then, without warning, it turns into something more.
River and I both have our secrets, and that’s okay. Because I understand him. And he understands me.
For the first time in my life, I have something I never thought I would have—happiness.
But happiness isn’t forever. Not for people like me.
Especially not when my past is waiting just around the corner, ready to come and take it all away.

So, the prologue was leading me to think that this was a book I really wasnt' going to enjoy, because no one wants to read about people hurting kids. Then, it pulled me in and it was SO emotional, that poor boy (River). The FC had some issues to and they just worked..together. Well worth the read.

It was ok. It's a hard subject matter and kinda wanted it to show more of their healing process, especially River. He wasn't as open about his struggles or what he went thru. Just mainly showed his memories and thoughts but he didn't talk about it. He was such an ass at times and I don't think he saw why he would snap at times. As for Carrie, she got on my nerves, i don't know i just didn't like her. I was more invested with Rivers story than hers and wanted to know more about him. They both needed serious therapy and no where did it say anything about counseling. You don't just put your past in the past and move on when something so traumatic happens to you as a child. It defines who you are as an adult. Author missed out by not addressing how much therapy could've helped them.
