They gave me the road name Rattler. Oh, it’s not because I’m a snake in the grass, it’s due to my have a habit of rattling people’s chains. I’d say it was their fault, they lay themselves open to being mocked. Take Saint and Short, for example, they’ve recently taken old ladies. One thing’s for certain. I’m never going to be so stupid and tie myself down.

I’m not laughing when I’m stuck all night long in a closet with Ames, a server at our strip club. She’s so clumsy I have no idea why Freak employed her. Especially when I learn she comes with baggage a mile long, but I do spot an opportunity for the club. It turns out, if she can stay alive for another six years, she comes into a fortune. Or, she gets the money earlier, if she’s married.

Maybe there’s a brother who’d want to throw their lot in with her?

For a share of her inheritance, it’s agreed the Kings will protect her. Then it’s discovered the danger to her life is close to hand. To keep her safe, it’s decided to send her off the radar.

Turns out I’m not the most popular brother. When they suggest it’s me who goes with her, I’ve no doubt as to why.

Before I can come up with a sufficient counter argument, I have a wedding ring on my finger that matches hers and I’m alone, with a woman I don’t even like, in an isolated cabin.
