Passionate Protection was about Jessica "Jess" Forbes and Sebastian de Calvadores. In order to get her rather impulsive and immature 18-year-old cousin Isabel (who was "nearly engaged" to one of her father's business partners) out of a "near engagement" to a Spanish boy named Jorge, whom she met while on holiday in Spain, Jessica's aunt asked her to go speak with "the Spanish boy" while she was there on a business trip and "break off" the potential engagement. Jess was all too easily manipulated by her aunt, uncle, and cousin, and they all took advantage of her. Reluctantly agreeing to help her cousin, Jess showed up at the Calvadores' home, only to be confronted by Sebastian, Jorge's older brother, who mistook her for Isabel and accusing her of trying to trap Jorge in marriage in order for her to gain access to their money and title. When Jessica tried to correct his assumption, Sebastian just kept right on spewing out hurtful, hateful words regarding her supposed character. Sebastian showed her proof that her cousin had been misleading her all along, and Jess immediately confronted her, only to have Isabel say just as many scathing things about her as Sebastian had. Jessica learned the hard way just how selfish, hateful, and immature her cousin truly was. When Sebastian learned that Jess was an expert fabric designer and that her boss was a potential client, he used that information to force her into working for him...or watch her employer lose his business. Jess had no choice but to accept the deal. Sebastian intended to let the world believe she was his mistress, and he fully intended to make it be the truth. Once again, Jessica was being used, this time by her boss and Sebastian, against her will. All she had to do was open her bloody mouth and tell Sebastian her true identity and then that would have put an end to it. But did she? No! The story was so unreal and unbelievable. Sebastian's raging jealousy got out of hand time after time. He could not seem to control it and Jessica felt the brunt of his anger at every turn. For such a short story, there was a tremendous amount of angst and drama from beginning to end. While there was also a lot of passion and attraction, the animosity seriously overshadowed all of it. There was no humor in this book to alleviate the dark tone it carried. The lack of communication and honesty between the main characters was unacceptable. This story was typical of what romance novels were back in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. An arrogant, overbearing, beast of a man out to prove to the weak, mamby-pamby "innocent" woman that he alone is in control and damned be the woman who has even a single thought to stand up to him with any measure of a backbone. Heaven forbid that anyone should stand up in the beginning and tell the truth and have open communication. Let's all hide from the truth, seal our lips shut, and allow everyone to think badly of us. Such a dumb premise for a book that is about romance and love and hope. No stars and no adding to the Keeper for the Shelves collection. This type of book deserves the trash can only.
