Pax claimed he didn't want to fail again from protecting a woman; well, he did by having sex with Jack while Beatrice was beaten/tortured half to death.

While the female was being beaten/tortured her so called mates were having sex instead of looking for her. She should not have forgiven them as easily as she did, but to be honest they should not have been forgiven for a long time. What they did while she was beaten/tortured is very troublesome thought to me.
