“You’re going to pay me two-thousand dollars to go to a wedding??”

Alex:
I was engaged to the girl of my dreams.
Then a tragic accident took away my whole life.
Now she’s going to marry another man. Not just any man–the biggest asshole I ever met. But he can give her the life I can’t. Time to accept it and move on.
Except why did I agree to go to the wedding? And worse, why did I tell her I was bringing a date??

Nellie:
I am so freaking broke.
My gigs as a comedian don’t pay the bills. Not yet, anyway. So when I get canned from my waitressing job, I’m in big trouble.
But then a stranger in a business suit offers me a wad of cash. The job? Pretend to be his brother’s girlfriend for a wedding in Vegas.
Except it turns out my fake boyfriend and I have met before.

He’s a different man now, but he’s still as drop-dead handsome as I remember. He still makes my knees weak. And there’s one other thing that hasn’t changed:
He’s still hung up on his ex.

This book left me with some very conflicted feelings as I thought about it in depth. Spoilers beware The writer repeatedly labelled Isabelle as “ a nice and smart person” through passing dialogues (probably to avoid the "beautiful but shallow" stereotype), but this behaviour seldom reflected in her behaviour. Although Isabelle was a flawed, human character in her own right, the attempts made to whitewash her as a “saint” felt like a lazy method to circumvent yet another stereotype that plagues romance books - the "evil ex girlfriend”. The choices she made throughout the story are obscure and would have been best left to the readers to interpret for a more thought provoking read. Alex had a heartbreaking story. It was evident that he deeply cared for those he loved. It was implied that he fell head over heels in love with his previous girlfriend (probably a little too soon), and the relationship met a messy end (for both parties) which could have been avoided if they had taken the time and patience to truly understand each other. It did not help that he spontaneously fell in love with Nellie (again without taking much time to know one another) and this seemed to cast a looming shadow over the Happily Ever After. He seems to make the same mistake over and over again, paying the consequences each time.
