A gentleman should never mix business with pleasure, unless he’s a gentleman courtesan …

Driven to selling his services to settle gambling debts, the Honourable Mr. Dominick Burke thoroughly enjoys satisfying the appetites of wealthy women. When Miss Calliope Barrington contracts his services, his desire for her is instant and powerful.
Unfortunately, her reasons for hiring him have nothing to do with his bedroom talents. On the hunt for a husband, Calliope plans for Dominick to act the part of enamored suitor—thereby making her a more attractive prospect for the gentleman she has her eye on.
In his attempt to seduce her at every turn, Dominick finds himself rapidly losing his heart. However, winning Calliope’s in return will prove difficult. With the true target of Calliope’s efforts taking notice, he now has competition. When a past misdeed threatens to ruin everything, Dominick is left with no other choice. To win Calliope, he’ll have to incite one of the biggest scandals the ton has ever seen.

I've never truly been into what I call "flashback novels". Ones that begin with the intro to the book but then immediately flashback months or even years. They just aren't interesting enough. There was definitely a great deal of humor at the beginning of this book. A drunk Dominick was a sight to behold. It also began with a lot of angst before it did the flashback. Dominick's character was well written and he lived up to his reputation...until he didn't. He went through various changes from beginning to end, but he always remained true to himself. He was a loveable rake, that's for certain. He never pretended to be something he wasn't. However, I truly did not like the main female character. Calliope was too much of a...well, let's be polite, shall we? She was a witch in an angel costume from the beginning. Her character, alone, made this reader want to stop reading altogether. I got to chapter 5 and was ready to put it down, all because the attitude she gave was one of haughty nobility, one who was better than everyone else. She had a chip on her shoulder and she wielded it well for the world to see. There wasn't a great deal of passion or humor in this book, and there most certainly wasn't a drop of chemistry between the two main characters. Sorry, but this book was so blase that it couldn't hold my attention for long. I often found myself doing mundane internet searches and playing games just to avoid it. She was a judgemental witch. She knew what he was when she hired him. She also knew the scandal that would come if it was ever found out. AND she knew what the other guy was truly like. So...who did she choose? I detested her...right up to the last few paragraphs. Did I ever come to like her? No, I can't say I did. Dominick should...and could...have done better. Definitely not a book that is Keeper for the Shelves worthy.
