Careless Whisper by Maya Alden
He broke her heart, shook her soul.
Now, he wants to make it right.
But she’s not ready to lose control.
Five years ago in Boston, Dr. Elias Graham derailed nurse Regina Sanchez’s career when his ex (and close friend)—an attending physician—unfairly blamed her for a patient’s death. Rather than defend Reggie, Elias took his ex’s side, costing Reggie her job and ending their fledgling relationship.
Now the new Head of Cardiac Surgery at Harper Memorial in Seattle, Elias is unhappy to find Reggie in his OR. Convinced she’s still a liability, he tries to push her out—until he realizes she’s not just competent but exceptional. And he’s never stopped wanting her.
But history has a way of repeating itself. When Elias’s manipulative ex reappears, the old lies resurface—stronger and more dangerous than before. Reggie’s career is put on the line once again.
As Elias uncovers the truth he should’ve seen long ago, he must confront his past, take down the woman who nearly destroyed them both, and fight for the only future that matters—one with Reggie in it.

Loved this story! Satisfying grovel!
Careless Whisper, part of A Modern Vintage Romance, was about 37-year-old Dr. Elias Graham, a cardio-thoracic surgeon who had become the new Head of Cardiac Surgery at Harper Memorial in Seattle, and 29-year-old Regina "Reggie" (Elias used to call her "GiGi") Sanchez, a highly skilled surgical nurse.
Five years before the book started, Reggie and Elias both worked at a hospital in Boston. They were a couple until his ex made trouble for her and saw to it that not only did Elias break things off with her, but Reggie also lost her job because of the other woman's accusations. During this time apart, neither of the main characters was celibate, both having relationships (aka one-night stands, etc) with others. (view spoiler) Five years later, much to his dismay, Elias became the head of the cardiac unit at the hospital where Reggie was working.
The book opened with Elias saying he would not allow Reggie to work in his OR, but the head nurse refused to let him have his way. He did, however, make her life a living hell over the next several months, going so far as to file a grievance against her that went into her file. Things only got worse when Elias' ex, the same doctor from Boston who had caused Reggie issues five years earlier, was hired at the same hospital. This woman continued to cause problems for Reggie, once again causing her to lose her job.
There were so many times in this book I wanted to bash someone over the head for their actions against Reggie, but she was such a strong female character that those who needed such things done to them all got their comeuppance when the time came.
For once, an FMC stood her ground and didn't yield to the MMC too quickly. She made him earn her back, in spades no less. There was quite a bit of growth for both the main characters, and yes, it showed. Unfortunately, the spiciness was more tame than spicy, so it was definitely a slow-burn story. Also, I loved how the family AND friends/co-workers of the FMC all rallied around her and were there for her when she needed them.
I gave this a solid four-star rating because it actually earned it. I would have given it five stars, but it needed just a tad more tweaking before I could do that.
@ Jo Jo: Yep, she had a really bad female villain and an awesome gay bestie for the FMC.
Was there the same over the top female villian and gay bestie she has in all her stories?
