It’s Halloween week and my roommate is dragging me to a bonfire party in the woods.
She didn’t tell me the bonfire is part of a fake virgin sacrifice.
Or that I am the virgin to be sacrificed.
Or that this would entail me being tied to a tree.
The sacrifice is fake, but everything else is real. The ropes. The virgin. The bonfire.
When the fire starts to burn out of control, everyone runs. They leave me for dead, tied up and helpless.
But then a mysterious stranger emerges to save me, slashing his way through the trees like a million strikes of lightning.
He unties my ropes but has no intention of letting me go.
This fiercely protective and obsessed older man wants to keep me with him forever.
And I think I might let him…
Virgin sacrifice?

For an Insta-love story, it was pretty decent. Dr. Adrian Stern had been living in California until a couple of months before the story started, but he had transferred hospitals to one that was a couple of towns away from his home where he met Emma (I don't recall if the author ever mentioned her last name). On a Halloween weekend, Emma was tricked into attending a bonfire on private property. What she didn't know was that her roommate and the roommate's buddies were going to "pretend" to use her as a virgin sacrifice to "appease the gods". They tied her to a tree, but before they got very far with the ritual, the owner of the property suddenly appeared on his porch. As they were all trying to figure out what to do, the fire got out of control and everyone ran away, leaving Emma not only still tied to the tree, but in danger of being burned by the fire that was quickly burning towards her. But she looked up to see the owner of the house racing towards her, and she screamed for help. Just like the words to a song, it took just one look for Adrian to realize he had found his reason for living...in Emma. It didn't take her long to realize the same thing. Short, but sweet, this story had everything one could ask for...almost. The idiots who pulled the prank didn't really get any true comeuppance, and that kind of ticked me off. But, for the most part, it was a decent story and deserved a four-star rating.

Abrupt, inconsistent, and I personally regret reading. Had potential, but lacked execution.
