They’d been neighbors for months — the methodical veterinary surgeon in 4B and the bartender with glitter on his collar in 4A.
Then a plumbing disaster flooded Benji’s apartment, and Peter made the mistake of offering his foster room as a temporary home.
It was supposed to last for two weeks, maybe three. They had separate shelves, separate schedules and there would be absolutely no touching the laminated kitten binder.
Their Post-it war started on day one.
“Your shampoo smells like a man who has given up on joy. I upgraded you. — B”
“I didn’t ask to be upgraded. — P”
“You didn’t ask to be happy either, and yet here we are. — B”
What followed was three months of 3 AM kitchen conversations, a stove light that stayed on long after either of them stopped pretending it was for the dog, and twenty-two feet of hallway that was never the distance that mattered.
