To Tempt An Earl, Book 3 of the Lords of London series, was about Lord Hamish Doherty, Earl Leighton, and Miss Katherine "Kat" Martin, the daughter of a successful Master Builder. (At least the author gave the main male character a last name in this book.) After rescuing Hamish from the fists of an irate innkeeper, the two parted ways with Katherine having given him her father's business card should he ever want to get in touch. Hamish, who had experienced a streak of ill-luck, returned to London, and the two didn't meet again for another three months. That encounter came after a fire burned a portion of his London home and Katherine's father was asked to give a quote for the rebuild. Hamish was invited to stay with Marquess Aaron and his wife, Cecilia until the remodeling was completed. When Kat told Hamish that, in repayment for her saving him from the innkeeper several months before, she would like for him to help her rid herself of her virginity, Hamish balked at the idea. While he could not deny he enjoyed the idea of doing so, he could not do it for, though he was a rake, even he had rules he did not break. After several attempts on her part, and being denied, she informed him she would withdraw the request, but that there would be someone else who might assist her in "doing the deed". Hamish did not like that...at all. The storyline was well-written, with enough twists and turns to keep it interesting till the end. The angst and drama were on a good level...not too much and not too little. The chemistry and passion between Kat and Hamish were both quite steamy, even though Hamish fought it for the longest time. There was enough humor to quell the roughest spots when the negative emotions sought to take over. The characters were well-developed, mature, and believable. Kat was the epitome of what all women of that era struggled to be in a time when men overshadowed the women. Hamish, in retrospect, was also the epitome of what many men of the time suffered from...fear; fear of wanting someone from a different class than they were from. Fear of doing the wrong thing and causing a scandal. Just plain fear of living. This book definitely earned a five-star rating and a place with the other Keeper for the Shelves novels.
