Dreams of true love and happy ever afters
Dreams of love are all well and good, but all Prunella Chuffington-Smythe wants is to publish her novel. Marriage at the price of her independence is something she will not consider. Having tasted success writing under a false name in The Lady’s Weekly Review, her alter ego is attaining notoriety and fame and Prue rather likes it.
A Duty that must be endured
Robert Adolphus, The Duke of Bedwin, is in no hurry to marry, he’s done it once and repeating that disaster is the last thing he desires. Yet, an heir is a necessary evil for a duke and one he cannot shirk. A dark reputation precedes him though, his first wife may have died young, but the scandals the beautiful, vivacious and spiteful creature supplied the ton have not. A wife must be found. A wife who is neither beautiful or vivacious but sweet and dull, and certain to stay out of trouble.
Dared to do something drastic
The sudden interest of a certain dastardly duke is as bewildering as it is unwelcome. She’ll not throw her ambitions aside to marry a scoundrel just as her plans for self-sufficiency and freedom are coming to fruition. Surely showing the man she’s not actually the meek little wallflower he is looking for should be enough to put paid to his intentions? When Prue is dared by her friends to do something drastic, it seems the perfect opportunity to kill two birds.
However, Prue cannot help being intrigued by the rogue who has inspired so many of her romances. Ordinarily, he plays the part of handsome rake, set on destroying her plucky heroine. But is he really the villain of the piece this time, or could he be the hero?
Finding out will be dangerous, but it just might inspire her greatest story yet.

An auspicious beginning to the Girls Who Dare Series. This book is about a widowed duke with a questionable reputation, a distaste for scandal, a sister to see wed, and a hunger for love (even if he denies it), and a girl who is a blue-stocking with a solid reputation, is quiet, loyal, and eager for independence...but does not want to marry. The duke is looking for a new duchess and wants to find a woman who isn't necessarily pretty, doesn't have a bad reputation, doesn't seek notoriety, loyal, and is willing to live a life in quiet solitude. The girl is a wallflower just waiting for the opportunity to be on her own and not dependent on the mean, vicious aunt and her cousin who both constantly verbally and emotionally abuse her, although you have to wonder about the reason behind her cousin's attitude. With that said, there is a great deal of humor in the story that captures the attention and pulls the reader further into its grasp. It was definitely an added plus to the story. It was woven in between the drama and the angst with such expertise that the reader was able to enjoy the story even more. The chemistry was definitely there between the Hero and the Heroine, but was slightly undertone until they start spending more time together. The way the two interacted was quite appealing, with most of their conversations both intriguing and humorous at the same time. With the Duke having lived with a soiled reputation due to his deceased wife's wicked ways, he was hard-pressed to trust again, so when he finds out that the Heroine has done something he feels vilified him, he didn't rush to forgive...or trust...her. When the outcome shows him differently, he does everything he can to win her heart. The romance and passion, while a bit muted (understandably so, given how things went), they were both well meted in the story. Just enough to make the heart pound, the adrenaline rush, and the desire to be tweaked. The Hero and Heroine were well suited and this reader enjoyed learning their story. The ending of this book is definitely and HEA, and one that wrings the heart. This book would definitely be Keeper for the Shelves worthy. I just hope the rest in the series lives up to this fantastic opening.
