Everything about this place is broken. The fireplace, the walls, the cupboards… me. But the gorgeous man next door says he’s good with his hands. Maybe he can fix it?

Zoe
The new house has peeling paint. And cracks in the wall. And boxes I can’t make myself unpack.
Worst of all, it doesn’t feel like home.
The only thing good about it is the hot guy next door.
He tells me he’s not into relationships. He can’t be the man I need in my life. He’s only good for… a good time.
And maybe I am too.
We promise each other it’s only going to happen once.
But we both know once isn’t going to be enough.
To my surprise, he offers to work on the place. To give my son and me a beautiful house.
And having him around makes it feel like a home.
Little by little, Carter Kane is fixing the everything broken in my life.
How do I convince him that he deserves to be in it?

Carter
I’ve said it a million times. I’m fun. Not forever.
So when a beautiful woman moves in next door, I have to wonder if she’s looking for a good time.
I know I am.
Until her son shows up.
Which means I need to back off.
Kids get attached. Kids expect things from you.
And Zoe Laster needs more than I can give her.
All I can do is build walls and fix water heaters. I build houses. I don’t make homes.
But every time I head back to my own place, the rooms are just too quiet.
There’s one one wall keeping me from the girl next doorr.
Maybe it’s time it came down.

Brief Happenstance
Brief Happenstance

It was strange reading this book after reading the first one because several details are inconsistent between the two! The hints at the future of some of the Kane romances from the first are changed in this book, as well as timeline changes, which threw me for a loop. I mean, why put easter eggs in a book to hint at things that either won't take place or will be completely different? In book one, Carter has been living next to this single mom (Zoe) at least since before Luke and Cindy even got together and before his friends Steph and Maya got married, because there he is playing with her son in the park before Cindy and Luke finally got together and before the wedding at the end. He was even having a good time with the kid with the mom not around, implying that there's already at least a relationship of trust there. In this book she and her son move in after Luke and Cindy are already engaged and well after his friends' wedding. Then Max moving home. In the first book Max tells Luke that his situation is different from Luke's first marriage because he really wants a relationship with Holly and is looking forward to being a dad (you are set up to expect probably a second-chance romance or something), but in the second book he just expresses regret toward the prospect of being a dad, especially with someone he hates (so now we switch to expecting enemies-to-lovers?!). And the Elias and Sarah. In the first book it seems like Elias is pining after Sarah, always staring at her, and they have this flirtatious relationship they are avoiding or keep hidden from Kieran, but in the second book she just drives him crazy and he hasn't warmed up to her yet. Anyway, I just wish there was more continuity in the writing for the series as a whole.
