The Ice Duchess was about Lady Georgiana "Georgie" Whitcomb, the widowed Countess Winterbourne, and Lord Dexter "Dex" Reed Munro, the Marquess of Westfield and soon-to-be the Duke of Markham. Georgie and Dex had known each other since childhood as Dex had been her brother's best friend and they had done everything together. Georgie had been half-in love with him, especially as they had shared a quick, chaste kiss at one point not long before he left. Unknown to Georgie, Dex had felt the same about her but, being 5 years older than her, and a restless young man, he wanted adventure and not to be trapped by obligations...which is what drove a wedge between him and his father, sending him off for nearly seven years. In the time Dex was gone, Georgie had been forced into a marriage with a 70-year-old man in order to pay her father's debts. She suffered much at the hands of her husband. However, now that he was gone, she was determined to never marry again, which had earned her the nickname of "Ice Countess". Instead, she opened a school where she would train other women in the ways of how to take care of themselves once they were married, but also how to choose the kind of man they truly wanted and not what others would force on them. Dex, forced to return to Derbyshire because his father was dying, had made a bargain with his father that he would produce a fiance by Twelfth Night. Soon after making that promise, he saw Georgie for the first time in seven years when they both attended the same musical. When their eyes met across the room, Dex had to admit the attraction was still there between them...and Georgie had to admit to herself that Dex still had the power to make her lose her breath and her heart speed up. Meeting up in a parlor at the party, Dex and Georgie began to tentatively repair the damaged friendship between them. After a while, they heard voices in the hall that indicated someone would soon be entering the room where they sat. Dex suggested a small wager...one like they used to do as children. They would each make a guess as to who it would be sneaking away from the musical to have a tryst with someone else. If Dex won, then Georgie would help him find a wife. If Georgie won, then Dex would help her have an adventure. In the end, they both won. However, what Georgie didn't know was that she was the only person Dex wanted to marry. He soon began to regret making the wager, though, because he realized that it had built a wall between him and Georgie...something he was not enjoying. This story had everything. It had angst, drama, chemistry, attraction, passion, fear, determination, humor, action, and even a touch of intrigue...everything. The characters were well-developed and the storyline had a firm foundation with little to no fluff. Knowing it was the prequel to a new series made it all the more tantalizing and the reader all the more eager for the next installment. This book earned a five-star rating and has the potential to be added to the Keeper for the Shelves collection...depending on how the series goes.
