She might have been married to his father, but there was no way he was going to call Lady Violet Forbes “stepmother,” especially since he’d been the one to introduce her to pleasure all those years ago.

Ten years ago, Violet betrayed the man she loved…by marrying his father. It wasn’t her fault, not exactly (you know how these things go), but Malcolm was, quite frankly, more than a little put out by the news. Now, as the widowed Countess of Hatwaring, she wields power and wealth in her young son’s name, but nine-year-old Brom’s small empire is wobbling. Violet needs to start selling off some of his estates in order to maintain the rest…which means angering the man who already thinks her far too brazen.

His secret is the love which still shames him.
Malcolm Forbes, the illegitimate son of the Earl of Hatwaring, always thought of himself as academic and stoic. A decade of managing one of his father’s far-flung estates taught him to think before he acts, but when he receives a letter from his father’s widow—and the only woman he’s ever loved—stating her intentions to sell his home, he reacts most rashly.

Now they’ve made a brazen bargain.
A deal is made, and after a mere month as the young earl’s tutor, Malcolm will secure the deed to his home. Unfortunately, this means a month with the one woman who can enrage his anger—and his passions—unlike anyone else.
Violet, meanwhile, is determined to earn his forgiveness, even if it means risking everything she’s hoped for, and revealing her secrets.
This likely won’t end well.

The Earl’s Brazen Widow, Book 2 of Those Kilted Bastards series, was about Lady Violet Forbes, the Dowager Countess Hatwaring, widow of the late Earl Hatwaring, and Malcolm Forbes, the illegitimate son of the late Lord Thomas Forbes, the Earl of Hatwaring. Ten years prior, Malcolm had courted Violet with the intention of marrying her. Although he did not have a title or money, he had hoped love would be enough. However, Violet ended up marrying his father instead. Ten years later, he received one of many letters from Violet, most of which he threw away or burned without ever reading. Upon reading the final letter, he realized Violet had been trying to give him fair warning that she was about to sell the property at which he and his mother lived. Determined to talk her out of it, he and his mother made the trip to Violet's home. When Violet made an offer for Malcolm to be able to keep the property in exchange for certain papers he'd had published, he refused. She then made him a second offer of him spending a month tutoring her young son in exchange for the property. It was an offer he could not refuse, though he did not want to spend a month in her home, for he realized he had never stopped loving her. There was a lot of angst and drama in this story, but there was also a ton of humor, passion, fear, anger, and a whole gamut of other emotions to touch the heart of the reader. The emotional rollercoaster ride that wove its way throughout the story lacked nothing. The storyline was a bit unique from most historical romance novels, but it was definitely well-written and kept the reader glued to the pages. The twists and turns were sometimes expected, but most surprising. It was well-written and had a depth to it that was unexpected. The characters were well-developed, mature, with the integrity most characters lack. Though there were quite a few grammatical errors throughout the book, it was still a decent book, one worthy of a five-star rating.
