Then I show up in a small town in Montana and run into Eli. Now I’m volunteering with him, hanging out with his family, and falling so fast I can barely breathe.
Packing up my belongings and leaving was the easy part. Ignoring my attraction to Eli is proving to be much harder. He’s smart, unfailingly kind, and he makes me feel seen. He chases away the loneliness. I feel real when I’m with him.
But he’s not mine, and I can’t make him mine. Not even just because of our age difference—although that plays its own role. I’ve already lost everything once, but I’m starting to think it might be worth the risk of doing it again—as long as I can keep him.
