Not the Kind of Earl You Marry, Book 1 of The Unconventional Ladies of Mayfair series, was about Miss Charlotte Hurst, sister to Lord Phillip Hurst, Baron, and Lord William Atherton, the Earl of Norwood. Outraged to see his name linked in the paper to a woman he had never met before, William immediately went to the home of Charlotte and her brother, Phillip to confront them about the bogus engagement. Believing either one of them had submitted the announcement in order to trap him into a marriage, William gave neither one any quarter and demanded to know what was going on. When both appeared to be just as surprised as he was, and that Charlotte seemed to be in no way enamored with him at all, he realized his mistake instantly. After apologizing to both, William reasoned that it must be someone who wanted to end his political career and so he convinced both Charlotte and Phillip to go along with the ruse until he could ferret out the culprits and deal with them. Charlotte, having been considered a wallflower for a long time, was in no way impressed with William or his need to continue with the fake engagement. However, realizing he was correct in needing to determine who was behind the hoax, reluctantly went along with it, although she did not want it to be a long, drawn-out process. She did not enjoy the lie. But the more time they spent together, the more real the engagement...and feelings...became. The storyline was well-written but with a plot that didn't make a lot of sense. Angst and drama were the two key elements of the book, with a touch of chemistry, romance, and a smidge of passion sprinkled into the mix. With the two main characters never having met before, the relationship that developed between them seemed, at first, a bit farcical. However, the length of the story allowed for the relationship to properly develop, even though Charlotte seemed to be against it from the outset, although she never gave a believable reason for not making the engagement into the real thing. The characters were well-developed if a bit immature...in Charlotte's case at least. William was definitely a man of honor and integrity. His character was one of the better ones in the entire book. While the book didn't warrant a five-star rating, it definitely will receive three stars.
