Never Dare a Wicked Earl, Book 1 of the Infamous Lords series, was about Hayden Milton, the Earl of Westfield, a widower of five years, and Miss Sophia Camden, nursing assistant to Dr. Thomas Trimble. After having been shot in the thigh by his former mistress, Hayden's sister hired Sophia as his nurse to attend to him until he was well again. Thinking a woman was not the best choice to aid in his recovery, Hayden immediately dismissed Sophia, only for her to tell him that she wasn't in his employment but rather his sisters. Sophia offered Hayden a wager that would give her ten days to prove her competence in her job. He was unable to resist the dare. Unfortunately, things happened that made Sophia leave the earl's home before the ten days, meaning he had won the dare. There was a lot happening in this book, so I won't give anything away. I will say that it was a very long, drawn-out story that could have been much shorter...or made into two different books. The author threw a lot in this story that didn't really need to be there. By the time Chapter 19 rolled around, this reader wondered what else the author was going to throw in. There truly was way too much fluff in this story. While there was definitely chemistry between Hayden and Sophia, and passion as well, there was more angst and drama than anything else, although there was some humor too...just not enough. Emotions definitely ran the gamut, though. I can't say this was a great story, but it was decent. It won't get either 4 or 5-star ratings either. When a book drones on and on with a lot of fluff, it detracts more than it enhances the story. Definitely not a Keeper for the Shelves kind of story though.
