Jett, Book 1 of the Knight Empire series, was about 33-year-old Jett (the eldest of the Knight siblings and the father to 5-year-old Brooke), and 24-year-old Cari Summers, his personal assistant/nanny.
Cari, who had been working as Jett's assistant for the past three years, was finally beginning to tire of his constant poot treatment of her. While her feelings for him went beyond those of an employee/employer, he never did. He was often harsh with her, to the point that her BFF/roommate had been trying to convince her for a year to find another position. He was constantly causing her to cancel her plans to do things for him, like buying trinkets and lingerie for his "flavor of the month" girlfriends and helping out with his daughter. She had only stayed because her mother had been ill and she needed the money to take care of her. However, her mother had passed away six months earlier, so she was seriously considering changing jobs.
Unfortunately, Jett caused Cari to miss the concert she had planned to attend with her roommate, all because he was late for his own daughter's birthday party. His current girlfriend, Alicia, was even throwing a fit about having to be there. When she returned to work the following Monday, she was prepared to hand in her written resignation, but was interrupted by the appearance of Jett's father, who apparently wanted Jett to enter into an arranged marriage with a Brazilian's daughter in order to form an alliance and join companies with them. Jett was appalled. After he returned to his office, Cari finally managed to hand him her resignation, although he wasn't looking at any of the mail she handed him. Instead, he wanted her to pick up another gift for his girlfriend and to set up a dinner date for them later that night. She told him she'd be taking a very long lunch.
When his life began to fall apart, Jett did what he always did: he turned to Cari to take care of things. He had broken up with his girlfriend of 7 months, lost his nanny because he threatened her job when she told him she wouldn't cut her vacation short for him, and he finally read Cari's resignation letter. In his anger and frustration, he decided to take it all out on Cari and make her spend 3 weeks babysitting his daughter while he was on a business trip in Bermuda. Of course, he was taking them both with him.
Even though he had told her that the evenings and weekends would be her free time while in Bermuda, their very first night was spent at a barbecue being held by some of his business associates. While there, he publicly humiliated her in front of several people The book was quite boring for most of the time. The push/pull between these two lasted so long that it became difficult to concentrate on it. By Chapter 25, these two were still dancing around each other with nothing of significance happening between them...and there were still 28 chapters to go. It wasn't until Chapter 32 that anything of significance happened.
Although their personal life heated up, the people Jett constantly introduced her to were vicious in their treatment of Cari...and with his daughter. But they hadn't been intimate long before the business world interrupted, and Jett had to leave Cari and Brooke alone in Bermuda while he tried to salvage a deal going south.
There was more than enough angst in this book, but the drama and spicy scenes were lacking. The push/pull between the two main characters was OTT and took up way too much of the story. There was more conflict than romance. While I enjoy a book with a plot moppet, the FMC spent more of her time with the child than she did the MMC. 90% of the secondary characters were against these two getting together. The couple got an HFN instead of an HEA, even in the bonus epilogue, which was disappointing to say the least. Plus, the storyline and plot didn't flow smoothly or make any real sense, to be honest. They were too choppy and broken into so many parts that it made the book boring. There were also quite a few unresolved issues, some of which were confusing as to why they were mentioned if they weren't going to be expounded on. Other issues were necessary to know the ending, but were left hanging.
While both main characters were somewhat fleshed out, the FMC was more mature than the MMC, but she needed more of a backbone than she had. While she wasn't a doormat, she gave in to the MMC too much and let him push her around. He took too long to understand his feelings for the FMC, and he didn't show much growth until the book was near the end. (Thankfully, there wasn't any cheating once these two got together.)
I only gave this book a 2-star rating. I just didn't feel any connection between the two main characters other than boss/employee. Due to the length of this book and the lack of continuity, I don't know if I will read any of the other books set to join this one in the future.
@Jo Jo: I can understand that after reading this book. It just didn't gel right, and it had so many confusing factors that quickly became boring.
This is pretty much a good summation of why I can't really get into this author. She is a fine writer, she crafts a good story, but there's never any heat or a believable romance in her books.
The story unfolds after reading the prequel. Slow burn and Jet is a jerk and Cari needs a backbone but the attraction they both feel comes to ahead and Jett finally makes his true feelings known. I would have loved more with the Knight brothers but that will come in the next book which I’m sure will be Dex. Their father is a piece of work and really wish his sons put him in his place but that may come in the series somewhere. Good read but would have liked a longer epilogue.
Well at least it had a happy ending 😍
*blaming it on his father
SPOILERS! I found it a bit challenging to get into the story, mainly because I felt Cari struggled to establish boundaries with her boss, which made her seem a bit like a doormat. He would ask her to buy gifts and make reservations for him and his girlfriend( she did things for him very outside of her job desription), and whenever he was rude, she seemed to excuse his behavior by blaming it on his grandfather. While I understand that he was under a lot of pressure, it seemed like Cari overlooked the fact that he was an individual who should take responsibility for his own actions. Additionally, she often found herself in uncomfortable situations just because his daughter said she wanted her there(. I get that she may have felt obligated (since she did love his daughter but she missed a concert with her friend who she doesnt hang out with often since she always busy being the ML errand boy, and i feel the need to emphasize that this is her boss's daughter not her niece or anything), but I couldn’t help but feel that she didn’t assert herself enough or protect her own interests, especially since she was trying to ''move on". I just could not connect with the heroine.
