Jack, Alpha of the Laighin Pride, lost his mate when they were just teens. She was given to another by a tyrannical Alpha who could not be defied. Jack went on to take control of the Pride by force. Bonnie went on to build a life with the male her Alpha chose for her. Now, years later, Jack is alone and bitter, doing all he can to keep Bonnie at arms’ length — when he’s not pulling her closer, unable to resist the temptation of the memory of what they once were. He wasn’t man enough to fight for her back then, and that means he surely doesn’t deserve her now, right? Forced to take a deeper look at who he is and what he truly needs, he realizes nothing in his life will ever matter because he’ll always be incomplete without his mate at his side. But it’s too late, she wants nothing to do with him.

Bonnie is widowed and raising two daughters she adores. Life didn’t turn out the way she thought it would, but she wouldn’t change a thing. It gave her a kind, patient male who loved her, and their babies who need her. So she’s okay with it. Except that dealing with her Alpha is driving her up the wall. He acts like she’s got the plague, barely even acknowledging that she’s alive. Unless it’s a day he decides it’s okay to cross that line. She’s grown more and more resentful of the disdain Jack treats her with and his hot and cold signals have pushed it over the top. She used to think she’d love him forever — at least in the most secret part of her soul. But now all she wants is for him to leave her alone. It’s too late. Too much time and too many feelings have fallen by the wayside. She’s done.

Will Jack be able to convince Bonnie to give him another chance? Has Bonnie closed her heart on him forever? Is there a way for them to find each other, to grasp what should have been, despite all that has been?
