Malcolm Oliphant is, beyond a doubt, the brains of the family. Since his father, the laird, announced whichever brother could marry and produce a son first would become the heir, Malcolm’s brothers have been running around, falling in love willy-nilly, without using their brains at all. But not Malcolm, oh no. He plans to do this intelligently.
He’ll find a widow with a son or two, thus proving her ability to bear male offspring, and explain to her they will be married. See? Simple. No need to bring emotions into it.
But when he finally meets the perfect woman for his plan, there’s no logical explanation for the way his heart keeps getting involved. It would be so much simpler if the stupid organ would just simmer down, but have you ever tried explaining things to a hunk of meat, whose sole purpose is moving blood around?Impossible! Besides, when Evelinde looks at him, he feels like…a hero.

Evelinde Oliphant’s situation is getting desperate. Since her first husband’s death, she and her two sons are living alone in what could charitably be called the middle-of-bloody-nowhere, without any real means of support. When a scholarly warrior–one who makes her heart pound with desire–saves her life, how can she not think of him as her very own savior?
Falling in love–and into Malcolm’s arms–is the easy part. But what will happen when she learns who he really is, and why he really married her?

In Scot Water, Book 4 of The Hots for Scots series, was about Malcolm Oliphant, one of the six illegitimate sons of Laird William Oliphant, and the widow Evelinde MacRob Oliphant. When Malcolm's father informed him and his five brothers that each must marry and produce a male heir within the year, few of them were happy with the edict. However, their father also told them that whoever provided him with the first legitimate male heir would become the next laird...well they still weren't happy but, with three brothers already married and working towards fulfilling their father's command, the race was on. While the three brothers who were already married had "fallen in love" with their new wives, Malcolm scoffed at the idea. His plan was to scout out the local widows who already had produced a son or two whose situation was dire and would be grateful to marry him, thus avoiding any emotional entanglement, which made the best sense to him. What he didn't take into consideration, though, were the feelings of the woman...or even, more importantly, those of her two children. Evelinde knew her situation was getting worse as her late husband had left her in the middle of nowhere without any means to support her and her two small sons, one five years old and one a babe-in-arms. Upon first sight, Malcolm couldn't take his eyes off the exhausted young mother. She was beautiful...and he made up his mind at once that she would be his wife. Although the weather prevented him from immediately going to he with his plan, once it abated, he made his way to her home. Along the way, he realized the river was swollen to overflowing from the torrential rains that had been relentlessly falling for weeks. However, though he was determined to reach her home, he noticed a woman clinging to an uprooted tree in the middle of the raging river. After arriving at Evelinde's home, and Malcolm had taken stock of their living situation, he knew that, whether she married him or not, he would ensure she and her wee lads were taken care of and received a better life. However, he was still determined to marry her, having finally actually met and spent time with her, he knew he wanted her. Once Malcolm told her of his desire to marry her, and she accepted, he had made one fatal error...he didn't tell her who he was or about the edict from his father about the first to marry and have an heir would be the next laird. Once again, the irreverent humor was off the charts, both sarcastic and dry. The sexual innuendoes were all the more hilarious since they were also being used by a very young, naive five-year-old boy who seemed to be enthralled with his "copulatory organ". While there was a bit of intrigue...not much, just a touch...it gave the story an added twist that wove the pages neatly together. The characters were, once again, well-rounded and well developed, with a touch of youthful mischievousness added in. Add a sausage-obsessed dog and it made for a hilariously enjoyable story that definitely earned a five-star rating and a place with the Keeper for the Shelves collection. This author is very good with her placement of humor.
