***Spoiler Alert*** If you have NOT read the first book of this series, you might not want to read this review. Absolutely ZERO stars for this story. First of all, it should not have been titled, "Heartless Duke", but rather "Heartless Lady", for though the Duke was a hard man, he proved time and again he did, in fact, have a heart. However, SHE proved herself to be the heartless one.

Book 2 of the League of Dukes series was all...wrong. I detested this book with a passion and could not understand WHY Ms. Scott saw fit to give this female main character a book of her own. For a woman to do the things she did, no matter WHY she did them, and the for her to be given the role of Heroine? NO! There was no excuse acceptable for at least some if not all, the things she did. Even if she had been coerced to do the things she did, nothing warranted her getting a main spot in a book. She did not deserve the main role. To keep this woman in the presence of those she had hurt, terrified, and betrayed was not a good plot scenario. The further I read, the more I hated the book. It never got better in regards to this woman's constant betrayal. That she continued to spout lies to save her own neck pissed me off horribly. When her circumstances changed, and she was guaranteed safety because of it, she should have been more than willing to tell the truth to set herself free from all the guilt she should have felt. But the author didn't see fit to take that path. As with Book 1, there was a whole lot of drama, way too much angst, and a ton of intrigue in Book 2. There was also passion and chemistry between the two main characters. However, once again, there was no humor to lighten the moments that were heavy with bad emotions. It was too thick to wade through it. While I am all for forgiving past deeds done to hurt a person, there is a limit to how much I want to pursue interacting with that person who inflicted the hurt upon me. The same should be said for the deeds Bridget did. All of the betrayals, the sufferings she inflicted upon those around her, the lies...they were too numerous to keep up with. Forgiving her, sure I can see the Duke doing that. Trusting her again? That would have been a much more difficult task to overcome. There were others who were involved from the first book that...what? Forgave Bridget for her actions? Really? Uh...NO! Unacceptable! If someone were to do to my family what Bridget did to theirs, she would have a fist planted in her face...and worse! Not forgiven and accepted into the family with open arms. For the author to expect the reader to actually LIKE this main character was asking too much. Even the ending of this book, although it ended with the normal HEA, was wrong. The person who wrongs another should NOT be the one making demands to correct the issues but rather that person should be seeking absolution. From beginning to end, this book was a slap in the face of every romance reader ever to pick up a novel and yearn for the love the characters seemed destined to find. There was one thing certain by the time the words "The End" came through and that is this book did NOT earn a place with the Keeper for the Shelves books. In fact, it needed to be BURNED for all the betrayal it had in it.
