It was...boring. By the time I'd reached chapter 4 (mind you, there are only 13 chapters and an epilogue), I was bored stiff. So much so that I actually put it down...for hours...before returning to it. That was STILL within the first 3 chapters. To say it was sluggish would b stating it mildly. The author spent a great deal of time focusing on the fact that the MMC had quite a few issues; then she'd switch tactics and focus on the issues the FMC had with HER side of things. Although the two of them felt attracted to each other, there really wasn't anything they did about it until much later. I made it to chapter 7...and it was STILL boring AF. There was so much fluff and too little romance involved. A good book/novella is one you can't put down until you finish it, no matter its length. This one...I walked away more often than I picked it up. Reaching chapter 4, I walked away...again for several hours. It just could not hold my attention. In fact, by the end of chapter 8, it got so boring I started falling asleep. I don't do that with books. I mean, I'm the type of reader who gets enjoyment out of reading a phone book, for crying out loud! (Are you old enough to remember phone books? LOL) It wasn't until the last three chapters that the book had any guts or substance that would even remotely grab the reader's attention and hold on for dear life until it reached the end. Why the author waited until then to put some meat in the story is beyond me. It would have been nice to see some grit sprinkled throughout the story; more push/pull between the main characters. It just fell flat. The characters were well-written if a little too jaded from all that the author made the endure. One thing this story did not lack was mental health issues...for more than one character...and the burden that the families and friends of those who suffer from them carry...some with loving acceptance, others with resentment and guilt. Unlike most romance novels, this was not an easy story to read because of all the issues regarding mental health. However, the author handled it beautifully, for the most part. The emotions were all over the place, and the angst was at a medium level. It was definitely a rollercoaster ride from beginning to end. Because of how long it took for the story to really kick in and grab the reader's attention, it brought the star rating down significantly. I can't award it more than a three-star rating. It had such potential, but it was left hanging in the wind.
