Earl of Darby, Book 22 of the Wicked Earls' Club series, as well as Book 4 of the Once Upon a Widow series, was about Nicholas, Earl of Darby, a man whose first wife died by suicide on their wedding night, and Miss Hannah Pendleton, sister to Nathaniel, the Viscount of Pendleton. Since he had lost his wife, Nicholas used his reputation as a rake to keep him from being good marriage material for the Ton mothers who were seeking husbands for their daughters. Hannah was finally having her first season in London. Although a touch heartsick that her childhood crush had fallen in love with someone else, she was determined to break a few hearts in return. A bit intimidated, yet intrigued by all the goings-on of the ton, no one was making her heart flutter...that is, until she met Nicholas, who just so happened to be a friend of her brother. Unfortunately, this book did a lot of meandering rather than getting to the point of the story. But thankfully it didn't do it for long. It was almost as if the author got sidetracked, realized it, then found the way back to where she meant the story to go all along. According to the blurb above, Hannah was supposed to be enjoying her time in society, yet there was hardly any mention of parties, balls, or events other than shopping and a dinner or two. Nothing really where she was able to meet any rakes or gentlemen. While there were the usual looks, hand touches, and other moments where the chemistry showed up between the two main characters, there really wasn't much more than that for the longest time. A lot of back and forth thoughts but definitely no acting on feelings. In fact, more often than not, Nicholas' thoughts were focused on Hannah being a friend and not a love interest. (On a side note: Hannah's brother's stepdaughter, Althea, was NOT Hannah's stepsister...she was her step-niece!) The angst and drama were high in this story...rightly so. There was humor, chemistry (finally), intrigue, and even a touch of passion. There was enough of the intrigue to keep the reader guessing what would happen next but always surprised by how the plot twists worked out. This book will take its place with the other Keeper for the Shelves books.
