The Duke of Decadence has a secret…
Well, to be honest, Bash has several. His father, the Demon Duke, might have been the cruelest man in all of England. Bash hates his own title, the very one he inherited and all the trappings that come with it. And most secret of all, he hopes never to marry and carry on that family legacy. Which is downright scandalous for a duke to even think.

Miss Isabella Carrington is trying not to be seen…
When a young lady of a certain age sneaks into a gaming hell, dressed as a man, she doesn’t wish to be discovered. While her and her sisters need the money, and she could win with her ability to count cards, it would be best if no one discovered she was there. With no male protector and no financial means, this high-stakes game of cards was their last hope.
But of course, the shrewd Duke of Decadence learns all of it in the course of a single evening. And when he comes to her with a proposition…work at the Den of Sins in exchange for his protection and her sisters’ launch into society, she isn’t certain how she can refuse. But Isabella doesn’t want to accept either. The man is everything she hates with his lavish life and decadent ways.

And worse still, he manages to steal her breath each and every time they meet…

Duke of Decadence, Book 9 of the Lords of Scandal series, was about Bash, the Duke of Devonhall, aka the Duke of Decadence, and Miss Isabella Carrington, second oldest of 4 sisters and daughter to a rich merchant, who had gone to the orient two years prior but had not been heard from since, which was unusual for the man. In order to help her sisters financially, Isabella donned the clothing of a man then she and her older sister, Eliza, sneaked into the Den of Sins gaming hell to play cards. Having an uncanny knack for counting cards, she was able to win quite a bit of money. Unfortunately, Bash realized Isabella was not a man and confronted her, thinking she and Eliza had been cheating at cards. When she explained to him and the other owners how she went about winning, they invited her to work for them as a dealer...which she immediately declined. The money Isabella had managed to win wasn't enough to save them from their unscrupulous and evil uncle, whose intention was to sell each sister off to the highest bidder and take control of their family's business and sell their home in order to profit from it. Having no other recourse, Eliza convinced Isabella to work as a dealer. While the above blurb said that the Duke was the one to offer her a proposition, it was actually the other way around. Isabella was the one to ask him for help. Isabella approached the Duke, carrying with her a note from Bash's brother, the Earl of Baxter. She told him about their circumstances and asked him for his help. He accepted her offer but demanded his own set of parameters in the process. The longer Isabella worked at the club, the closer she and Bash got, and the more he was determined they couldn't be together. He feared he was too much like his demon father to ever allow for any kind of relationship with anyone...and especially not with Isabella. While there was a good deal of chemistry between them, there was hardly any romance or passion. But then, they were rarely ever alone together. There was some angst and a touch of drama, but it was all quite muted. There wasn't any humor to lighten the mood of the story, so it was kind of dull. There was a bit of intrigue in the story that didn't get any answers, so the book has a bit of a cliffhanger to it...although I'd say most discerning readers could figure out the answers for themselves. While the book was decent enough, it just wasn't very cohesive. There were times that it seemed as though the story was going in one direction but then out of the blue it veered off and was doing something different...something that didn't fit right. Then the ending was a bit...flat with so much unresolved. This definitely was not a book worthy of a five-star rating...nor will it end up with the other Keeper for the Shelves books.
