Coming Home, Book 1 of the Copper Creek series, was about Lily Parker and Adam Campbell. The book began on the day Lily was to marry Adam. However, Lily woke up chained in the basement of her home, feeling lightheaded from being drugged. All she knew was that no one was looking for her, especially Adam. As the days passed, she started to doubt the sincerity of his love. The book then skipped ahead twelve years, with Adam drowning himself in alcohol. Having left his hometown believing that Lily had left him standing at the altar, he had stayed with family in the US before he joined the military, and tried to forget her in the arms of other women, one in particular who had "been his salvation" after leaving the army, and the one he thought he could marry but realized he could never give her what she deserved: his love and heart in its entirety. That, in many ways, still belonged to Lily. After getting fallen-down drunk, Adam woke up to a message from his youngest on his answering machine that requested a return call. Once he had sobered up enough, he did so, only to learn that his mother had cancer. Three weeks later, Adam found himself back in Copper Creek New Zealand...better known as home. But things weren't the same. Adam didn't find the warm welcome he had been expecting from his siblings. However, what he was the most surprised about was his mother's attitude. She definitely did not want him there. In fact, she took every opportunity to encourage him to return to the States. He also found it an eye-opener that Lily wasn't married...and that she had a child named Max. The book did a lot of flashbacks to the intervening twelve years. Adam especially focused on the time right after believing Lily had jilted him and his subsequent race back to America. He didn't remain faithful to her for long. Even though he still professed to still love her just four short months later, it didn't stop him from sleeping with another girl. Thankfully, the author let the "cheating" happen off-page. His first call home was to talk to his brother, Corey, but he wasn't available, so Adam had to settle for talking to his mother, who informed him that Lily "had returned" and was living with a guy she and Adam knew in school. He ended the call abruptly. It was at that point he started his womanizing. The longer Adam stayed in Copper Creek, the closer he found himself getting to Lily, except she tried hard to not reciprocate the same feelings. He also made one very large tactical error; he took Lily and Max by the house where she had grown up...the same place where her mother had tortured her. Lily wasn't happy with that. When Adam's brother, James told him what really happened the day Adam and Lily were supposed to get married, things started clicking into place. Adam confronted Lily, and Max figured out on his own who his dad was. Then Adam made peace with his brother, Owen, and decided a week later it was time to confront his parents with his new-found knowledge of the past. But every time Adam left the house, Lily was terrified it would be the last time she ever saw him...again. While he had the opportunity to confront his father, Adam still had not had a showdown with his mother. The conversation between him and his dad didn't last long, and it wasn't quite satisfactory either. For Lily, the flashbacks were more painful than memorable. Her thoughts were on the tragedy of not only Adam's abandonment but her mother's betrayal and abuse, as well as the premature birth of her infant son. With the recollections came the return of the nightmares she had to endure immediately following her escape from her mother's basement, and the fear that Adam would once again desert her and Max. When Adam finally got all the answers he needed, it nearly devastated him. But his brothers Corey, Drew, Owen, and James all rallied around him, Lily, and Max and they formed their own tight-knit family bond. This story was full of angst, drama, and most especially, heartache. But it was also full of love, joy, and, humor. The rollercoaster ride of emotions took the reader to a melee of feelings that ran the gamut and kept them on the edge of their seats. The plot twists were plentiful and, at times, mind-boggling. The intrigue was light but definitely clear enough to pique the reader's interest. Each character was fully developed and mature. The growth each one went through was apparent throughout the story. The strength of the heroine was phenomenal, and the hero was the character that matured the most out of them all. While some other reviews remarked on the faithfulness of the hero, one has to acknowledge that, by the time he entered into other relationships, he had been under the impression that the heroine had as well. Therefore, it was quite apparent there had been no cheating...by either of them. First, they hadn't been together, so the MMC had not cheated in his liaisons. Second, although the heroine had dated, she did not cheat. There was, however, quite a lot of miscommunication between the MMC and the FMC. They just didn't always talk about their fears, concerns, wants and needs as often as they should have. There were so many grammatical errors that it was a tad distracting, but not enough to make the reader want to stop reading. The story definitely needs more editing and tweaking. The content was a bit repetitive as well. If the author has the book edited, there's a good possibility that the number of chapters could be lowered as it would eliminate a good portion of fluff n stuff. With all the pros and cons pointed out, it is safe to say that this story easily earned a four-star rating, as well as a place in the Keeper of the Shelves collection.
