Winterberry Spark, Book 2.5 of The Silver Foxes of Westminster series (and Book 1 of the (Winterberry Park series), was about Miss Ruby Murdoch, nursemaid to the child of Mr. Alex Croydon, and Mr. Gilbert Phillips, Mr. Croydon's man of business. Ruby, who was rescued from the workhouse with her baby, was given the position of nursemaid to James, Mr. Croydon's 2-year-old son. Gil, having met Ruby six months prior to her new position, was the one who had been sent to the workhouse to get Ruby and her infant daughter, Faith. During the time they had spent together before the kidnapping, Gil and Ruby had formed a growing friendship that had all the earmarks of becoming romantic. However, because Ruby had put her trust in the wrong person, it had resulted in the kidnapping of James. That caused Gil to have quite a few misgivings in regards to his thoughts and feelings towards Ruby. When the housekeeper learned the truth about Ruby's past, she went to their employer and demanded that she be discharged immediately. When Mr. Croydon allowed himself to be swayed by public opinion, he felt he had little choice but to assist Ruby in finding a different position. The twists and turns in this book were, inarguably, rough. For someone who had such a life forced on them as Ruby suffered, to be given a reprieve, only to have it cruelly and maliciously yanked away at the first sign of trouble was reprehensible. What bothered me the most was the reaction of her employer; a man who was trying to convince all of England he stood for the rights of women and yet...he turned his back on one who needed the most help. A woman whose name HE made public (read the previous book) in order to bring down his archenemy without giving any thought as to what long-term damage it would cause her when all was said and done. I struggled to like most of the characters in this story, mainly because they were so fickle, immature, judgemental, and self-righteous...never considering all the facts of the bigger picture. No, this book did not earn a five-star rating. I don't understand how others found it to merit such a rating. Perhaps they don't mind bullies, harpies, hypocrites, and just flat-out hateful people.
