Lady Verity Ayles will do whatever it takes to protect herself from a vile cur, no matter how scandalous or perilous it may be. And that means aligning with James Radcliffe, the Earl of Maschelly—a scoundrel who spends his days in sin and self-indulgence, and his nights in reckless pursuits. Clearly, a man any young lady of good sense and reputation should stay away from.
James had clawed his way from poverty to the fringes of the ton using his wits and fists. His wicked reputation encourages ladies to approach him for clandestine affairs, never for anything as outrageous as Lady Verity’s request—to teach her how to fight. And in exchange, she will instruct him on all the refined manners a hulking, ruthless, fighting brute as himself needed to net a lady of quality. Never a man to resist a challenge or the company of a beautiful lady, James agrees, and soon finds himself falling endlessly in love with a woman who may never see him as the man of her dreams.

When the Earl was Wicked, Book 5 of the Forever Yours series, was about Lady Verity Ayles, sister to Lord Albert Ayles, the Earl of Sutcliffe (in some places in the book, her brother was referred to as the Earl of Sutcliffe, but in others, he was referred to as Viscount Sutcliffe, and in still another place her brother's first name was changed from Albert to Arthur), and Lord James Radcliffe, the Earl of Maschelly. Several years earlier, having suffered an assault by one of her brother's friends, Verity had been in seclusion ever since. Determining she wanted to return to Society in order to find a husband, she returned to London, only for her long ago assailant to make further overtures. Fearing another assault, Verity sought out Lord James with a business proposition: he would teach her to fight and she would teach him how to comport himself with more refinement in order to find a wife and to fit into Society better. There was so much to enjoy about this book that it's hard to know where to begin without giving too much away. The angst and drama were off the chart, but in such a way that they were quite daring and definitely not out of proportion with the plot and storyline. The passion, though light, was a simmering volcano waiting to erupt. There was a touch of humor that eased the tension when necessary. The characters were well-developed and fleshed out. Verity, being a survivor of an assault, was a force to be reckoned with, having such a determination to no longer be a victim of her fears and nightmares. James was one of the best Heroes of a romance novel that I have read in a long time. He was a protector of the weak who stepped up to the plate and defended when no other defender was around. This book definitely earned a five-star rating and a place amongst the other Keeper for the Shelves books.
