Poor, unfortunate Spinster…Prudence Westfall, spinster, has unexpectedly had the greatest misfortune of all: she has inherited a fortune, and is now an heiress. But as a Spinster, and a stammering shy one, nothing could be worse than having a bevy of suitors pay her attention. Opportunity strikes at a house party when the most unlikely person offers the perfect solution.
Camden Vale is no gentleman, and he’s not prone to saving anyone, but something about Prue changes all that. When his offer to befriend her extends beyond the house party, and his feelings extend beyond expectation, no one is more surprised than he. Except, perhaps, for the other Spinsters, and they have much to say on the subject.

This was an extremely unpleasant book to read. All the characters are rude and nasty without any explanation to why they are so. Why is her mother so unpleasant with Prue?

It was also extremely tedious and I had yo resort to rapid reading and even more rapid skipping of pages. Nothing happens, only long winding self pitying soliloquies.

I'm very disappointed since I really like the underdog tropes. Unfortunately, this one doesn't redeem itself anywhere. I must admit the author's extremely intelligent - lots of premises in the plot that really never happen.

If you are a champion for the Underdog, the ill-treated, the meek and mild, the ones who need someone to stand up for and stand beside them in support, this book will be for you. If you are for the bully, you'll absolutely hate it. While I love the main female character, I absolutely detested her mother...which I'm certain was the aim of the author. :) That woman had not an ounce of compassion, mercy, love, caring...well any GOOD emotions ... at all. She made me think of the statement, "needing to be drug out in the street and..." (you fill in the rest. I don't want to instigate! LOL). I very much liked the main male character too, despite the fact the blurb stated "he was no gentleman", and he didn't consider himself to be "a protective man by nature." However, it appeared he did have a kind heart and was quite understanding of what the Heroine struggled with. The angst was high in this book, but the passion was mediocre at best. The humor was off the charts again and the drama was over the top. The only drawback I saw was that the author had a tendency to drone on and on about the Heroine's "handicaps" and, at times, it was a bit overdone. There were times that it seemed like paragraph after paragraph was dedicated to just those handicaps and it got to be quite irritating. Then there was her cousin and aunt. Atrocious people to say the least! The longer this book went on, the more I wanted it to end...and fast, because the more I read, the angrier I got at how she was treated. It's at times like these that I can appreciate the speed reading class I was forced to take, as it assists me in getting through the grueling task of reading something dreadful. Even though this book was the second in the Spinster Chronicles series, the Spinsters (with a capital S) rarely made an appearance and, when they did, at first, they weren't all that supportive either. I was glad to see that change after a few chapters though. The way this book meandered through the "handicaps" and the hateful diatribe the spiteful characters spewed caused this reader to feel a bit lost from time to time, but it did finally get to the HEA and leader into the next book. Not a "Keeper for the Shelf" worthy, sad to say, but because it is part of a set, I might have to add it.
