Before I write my review, let me just give all other potential readers a heads up. You should read this book first and then "Home for the Holidays" (found in the anthology "Tis the Season by Jennifer Ashley) before reading "A Lady's Guide to a Gentleman's Heart" (the second book in The Heart of a Scandal series) since the two aforementioned are really the prequels and/or companions to "A Lady's Guide to a Gentleman's Heart". If you read the three books in that order, you won't get lost. Now to my review of this book. The Rogue Who Rescued Her, Book 3 in The Brethren series, was about Lord Sheldon Graham Whitworth, third son to the Duke of Sutton, and Mrs. Martha "Marti" Donaldson, the widow of the late Lord Barrett, Viscount Waters. Graham lived most of his life as an afterthought to his family. He tried everything he could to gain the approval of his father, to no avail, until one day, he just stopped trying and decided to go rogue, living for only what pleased him and no one else. Leaving his family home where his mother was beginning her yearly holiday house party and after yet another diatribe from his father, Graham hurried to the meeting to which he was urgently called from the Home Office. As far as his father knew, Graham had been rejected when he had applied for a position within the Home Office. However, that was not, in fact, true. He just couldn't, nor did he even want, to tell him he had been accepted in the Brethren. It was part of his disguise, to continue with the act of a rogue. Assigned to spend 14 days acting as a stable master while he ferreted out any and all information regarding Marti and her son, Frederick, Graham was outraged. His first assignment as an agent with the Brethren...to act as a servant watching a widow and her son, to make certain all was well with them? While he felt there was more to it, he was given no further information. Many things happened the moment Graham met Marti, the first of which was an attraction that drew them both together of its own volition. Graham could tell there were many secrets surrounding Marti and her son, Frederick...secrets she was unwilling to discuss. However, he could also see that there was a great deal of distrust in her and he had to figure out how to win her over in order to complete his task for the Home Office. Marti didn't trust anyone...except her son. Having been betrayed by every man she had ever known, she was wary around not only strangers but even the men and women she had known all her life. Due to the scandal that erupted before and after the death of her husband, Marti had been forced to send her 11-year-old twin daughters away in order to protect them from further ruin, tearing her heart in two at the loss of her children. Working as Marti's stable master, he slowly began to learn about her and some of the secrets she kept hidden. The longer he stayed, the deeper the chemistry between them became, making it difficult to avoid the intimacy they both craved. Yet, he had to if he were to be capable of leaving when the time drew near. When circumstances changed and Marti learned Graham's true identity, she tossed him out of her home. After he left, Marti and Frederick's safety became so precarious she dared not to sleep in fear of harm coming to her son...or herself. There were so many twists and turns in this book that it was difficult to put down. Oh, there was angst, drama, intrigue, and humor in abundance. But there was also betrayal, fear, and hatred as well with many of the characters. Reading this story, you just don't have a clue as to who is the villain/ness and who the good guys are. The surprises this story incorporated were nearly overwhelming...in a good way though. The storyline was well-developed and the characters fleshed out to the point they almost leaped off the pages into real life. This book definitely earned a five-star rating and will have a place with the other Keeper for the Shelves collection.
