The next steamy historical romance from the bestseller Jess Michaels.

Imogen Huxley was already questioning her decision to seek out a lover at a notorious brothel, but never more so than after she witnesses a murder! She flees for her life and runs right into the arms of Oscar Fitzhugh, a mysterious club owner. She has no choice but to take his offer of protection while he tries to save her life. The passion that comes with that protection is just a bonus.

Oscar Fitzhugh was at the brothel investigating the death of his former mistress. He’s one of the infamous by-blows of the Duke of Roseford, but he cut himself off from that life long ago. Now he lives his life, trying desperately to keep everyone around him at arm’s length. But Imogen is too intriguing not to protect and seduce.

Danger is at every turn, pleasure in each touch. But as they circle ever closer to a future that could be everything they’ve ever needed, the murderer looking for Imogen is also coming nearer. If he finds them, all will be lost.

Book 4 of The Duke's By-Blows was, for lack of a stronger word, intense. There was so much drama and angst from the very beginning, and it never let up. The chemistry between the two main characters was...hot...and instant from the first moment they met and just kept getting hotter. The passion was sweltering. There was a lot of intrigue and drama in this story. Sometimes, though, it seemed to drag out longer than it needed to. There was a good deal of...well, dead air, I guess. Times when the author seemed to use what I call filler-words to fill the word quota required by publishers. As the book began to reach its climax and finally get to the root of the story, the angst and drama reached higher proportions, as did the passion. The reader was definitely doing the ritualistic dance to the tune of, "aw, come one! What happens next?!" (In a good way!) In fact, this book had so much intrigue, drama, and angst that it could very well rate more of an action/spy thriller than a romance novel. The ending was a bit unexpected but definitely better than how Book 3 came to its conclusion. While it did have moments where it could be improved, this book definitely found its place amongst the Keeper for the Shelves books.
