Book 2 of The Duke's By-Blows Series didn't hold my attention quite as much as the first in the series. It was a bit different than the first, as it should have been. However, it wasn't so much the difference as it was one particular character. The main male character was a former military man, a comrade of the Duke of Roseford's half-brother, Nicholas Gillingham. After leaving the military, he and another comrade started an investigative business together. For this book, Derrick Huntington and his partner were investigating the thefts made by the Faceless Fox, an unknown thief who enjoyed stealing from the members of the ton. The main female character, Selina Oliver, was another of the Duke of Roseford's half-siblings. She enjoyed being one of the wild siblings, even to the point of flaunting society's rules in their faces. She didn't have a problem with taking lovers or even being a thief. Although being a thief started out as a means of survival, she continued to do it because she found it fun. Now, she was the character that bothered me the most. I suppose it could be that she wasn't the normal Heroine would expect for most romance books. She wasn't the usual "sweet, innocent, proper" miss one would often find. She was more what one would see as a female rakehell, and that in and of itself was a bit unsettling, to say the least. Or, it could be that she didn't mind using or hurting people, as well as stealing from them. She just wasn't...kind. Reading about her character in the first book, there was a hint of it, but so far in this one...yeah, not so much. Whatever, the cause, I just did not like her. Selina met Derrick while both were attending her brother's, the Duke of Roseford, house party. Derrick was there because he had received notice that the Faceless Fox might put in an appearance in order to steal a most famous diamond and sapphire necklace. He was determined to finally catch the thief. Selina was attending in order to steal the very same necklace, but she learned about the investigation and now had to determine what to do to keep from getting caught. There was an immediate attraction between the two main characters, and Selina was determined to use that against Derrick. She had no problem flirting with him, which caused him to be quite distracted from the case. But, perhaps that also caused her to be all the more endearing. One must learn to not judge that which doesn't always make sense, right? This book was a good deal longer than the first. Maybe it was a bit too long. By the end of chapter 10, it started to become somewhat boring. It seemed to drag out the drama but, while it had some chemistry between the main characters, it took a while for the passion to ignite. At first, there was more angst and intrigue than romance involved and little to no humor. This could have been more a book of intrigue than romance. There were quite a few characters I despised in this book, but one in particular truly rubbed me the wrong way. Someone who was truly vicious and enjoyed putting others down, making them doubt their worth, both to others as well as themselves. The many twists and turns this book took definitely kept the reader on their toes. Although the outcome did not end the way one would expect, there was still a HEA. For that alone gave this book its well-deserved position among the Keeper for the Shelves books.
