Shunned by a society that puts attractiveness above all else, Lady Eliza Darby’s wallflower status keeps her from getting the one thing she wants most, namely, to be a mother. But when her scorned older sister returns home to see all of her sisters wed in happy matches, it may be Eliza’s only chance to secure a husband and have the children she so desires.

Jilted in a publicly humiliating display, Dax Kane, the Duke of Ashbourne, has sworn off love forever and has no wish to wed. But when the title demands it, he selects the most perfect candidate for the position: Lady Eliza Darby, a wallflower so unattractive, he won’t be in danger of falling in love with her. But the Jilted Duke will soon discover looks have nothing to do with love.

The heroine looks like the wicked witch of the west and has all the personality of Mary, the 5th sister from Pride and Prejudice. The hero might have fallen in love with her due to the plot but unfortunately there is nothing to endear her to the readers.

The Duke and the Wallflower, Book 1 in The Unwanted Dukes series, was about His Grace Daxton "Dax" Kane, the Duke of Ashbourne, and Lady Eliza Darby, daughter of the sixth Duke of Ravenwood, sister to the now seventh Duke of Ravenwood. Dax, also known around Society as "the jilted duke" (because the woman he loved as a young man had left him to elope with his best friend), knew he had to marry to carry on his lineage, but he was determined to never love again and to marry someone who was so plain that she would not cause such emotions to develop in him. He chose Eliza for just that reason because she had the misfortune to look like her father rather than her beautiful mother and sisters. Several days after marrying Eliza, they attended a ball where Dax had a conversation with one of his friends. During the conversation, Sebastian told Dax he should just be honest with Eliza about his feelings, to which he responded with some of the most hurtful words imaginable, "The entire point of this farce was to marry a woman so ugly I would never be in danger of falling in love with her.”...and Eliza heard every hateful word. While Dax apologized the very next morning, Eliza didn't quite believe him. Dax realized how much he had injured Eliza with his words and he was determined to do everything in his power to make things right between them. Eliza was just as determined to only go as far as producing an heir and a spare and nothing more. Although Dax was set on never loving Eliza, that did not stop him from being jealous when her attention seemed to be focused on anything but him. When someone from Dax's past came back to destroy his marriage and ruin him, he was terrified he would lose Eliza forever. While there hadn't been any real chemistry between Dax and Eliza, there was no denying the passion. The attraction between them grew at a snail's pace...but grow it did. There was more drama and angst than expected, but it didn't detract from the story. But there really wasn't much humor to alleviate the angst. This was a good story. Dax and Eliza were well-developed characters, and both were deserving of their HEA, just as the villains were deserving in whatever their outcome was. Definitely, a five-star novel, and it earned its place with the Keeper for the Shelves collection.
