The Autumn Duke, Book 4 of A Duke For All Seasons series, was about His Grace Byron Thomas Johnson, the Duke of Wakefield, and Lady Katherine "Kitty" Dower, the beautiful, yet vain, daughter of a marquess. She was also arrogant enough to believe that no man was allowed to reject her...that SHE would be the one doing the rejecting. Side Note: Once again, the grammatical errors were atrocious and many. It's mind-boggling that, with today's ability to do online proofing and checking, that so many errors make it into books and novellas. Even those that are self-published have the ability to be corrected before submitting for publication. At the age of 12, Kitty had her Perfect Husband List. If the man she was contemplating did not meet those requirements, their names would be scratched off and she would continue her search. Years later and still no one had managed to meet every requirement on the list, much to her dismay. She began to wonder if she had set her sights too high. Byron, having been horribly abused as a child, had determined from the age of 14, when he became the Duke upon his cruel father's death, that the title would pass to a distant relative as he was determined to pass neither his father's name nor his blood on to any potential heir. 14 years later, he continued to defy his father by remaining determined to never marry nor to have children. When Byron found his best friend and closest neighbor, the Duke of Glenmoore (from Book 3 of the series), in the field after having fallen off his horse and broken his leg, he managed to get him back home where he met Kitty for the first time. Both were immediately drawn to each other, with the chemistry and attraction so thick it could have been sliced with a knife. Byron, for his part, was determined to avoid her at all cost, while Kitty believed she had finally met the man she would eventually marry. Kitty, having set her sights on Byron, used every trick in the book to win him over. She did not hesitate to use double entendres and sexual innuendos as often as she could, much to Byron's shock and delight. After their first kiss, he informed Kitty, quite arrogantly, that he was not going to be trapped into marrying her. She responded by saying that, though it might have been the best kiss she'd ever had, it was not worthy of marriage...which caused Byron to feel the first stirrings of jealousy at the thought of someone else...anyone else, ever having kissed her...and what he'd do if he found out who it had been. There was a good deal of humor in this book...mostly thanks to Kitty's determination to snag Byron for her husband. The lengths she went to in order to garner his attentions were quite hilarious at times. Byron's reactions to those attempts were just as funny, if not predictable. The attraction, chemistry, and passion were all quite apparent and more than just a flicker or smolder. They were bordering on a wildfire. Emotions that filled the book were ample. There was desire, lust, fear, excitement, anger, pain, heartache, and uncertainty. The drama was present but not overdone. Above all the other books in the series, this was by far the best. It won't get a five-star rating or be added to the Keeper for the Shelves collection, but it will be acknowledged as a very good novella.
