Brief Happenstance
Brief Happenstance

My one regret with this series is that *SPOILER ALERT * Jess never went to college at all. She originally planned to join her lonely father in Idaho for her senior year then go to Brown. It was an enormous deal to her. When her dad spent her college savings on his business, she eventually conceded that she might attend the local community college instead, but not even that ever happens. When Dom has his man-to-man conversation with Jess' dad about his future intentions with her, he's clear he never wants to get in the way of her hopes and dreams. I get that what she wanted for her future changed, but she becomes this barely educated, stay-at-home mom living on a ranch raising twins. Dom was ready to follow her anywhere and with Trent eventually leaving the pack to join Anna, Caleb doing his own thing, and her own parent/sibling situation stabilized, there was nothing keeping them and it would have given her a chance to go out into the world even for just a few years, see Europe, go to college, etc. with Dom. She could have settled after that but instead she really doesn't do anything but become this teenage homemaker with a bunch of kids by her early twenties. It just felt strange with the tone of female empowerment of the series, especially in comparison with where the story takes the rest of the women in their respective futures. She just sits back proud of everyone else, without really doing anything anymore. In the end she's proud of Anna for this, her mother for that, Leah for this, Sam for that, but what about her?
