“Everything is gonna be just fine, isn’t that right, Chowder?” he muttered under his breath to his companion, petting him as he spoke. “It’s a big step—no, a huge step—but with you by my side, I can do anything. Isn’t that right, buddy?”

The calm-tempered dog raised his head and snuffled at Asher’s hand before letting out a deep little woof. It was enough to reassure Asher and get him to settle down a little more.

He closed his eyes and allowed his mind to drift to hopeful thoughts of what his new life would be like.
He thought of having his own space for the first time in his life.
He imagined how exciting his classes would be.
He wondered if he would make friends with the other students . . .
