Sophia and the Duke, Book 7 of the Forever Yours series, was about Miss Sophia Knightly, the daughter of a vicar who was the third son of a baron and niece to Baron Litchfield, and His Grace William James Astor, the Duke of Wycliffe. At the age of 23 and William was the Marquess of Lyons and heir to the dukedom of Wycliffe, he had vowed to love this woman forever and would marry no one but her. However, his parents, the Duke and Duchess of Wycliffe forbade him from the union. His father encouraged him to take her as his mistress but not to wife and threatened both her family and himself with dire consequences if he disobeyed. Telling his parents that he would flee with the girl with or without their permission, he rushed to her side...only to be told by his brother, soon-to-be Dr. Simon Astor, that the girl and her family, along with several other families in the village, were sick with cholera, or worse, and that they might not survive. Believing she had died, William fled the country not long later. Nearly seven years later and now the Duke of Wycliffe, William returned from a long sojourn in India, only to be immediately and deliberately forced into a compromising position with a young lady by the girl's mother. Determined to do the honorable thing and marry her, he allowed her family to proceed with making the necessary arrangements for an immediate marriage. However, during a dinner party with her family, his mother, and his brother Simon, William was astonished to learn that the young lady and his brother had been in love with each other from the moment they met and that Simon had already sought her hand in marriage. Much to the dismay of her family, Simon and Miranda left the dinner party to elope together. While attending a ball in London, William took note of a young woman across the ballroom who seemed vaguely familiar to him. As he got closer, he was certain. It was the young woman he had fallen in love with all those years ago and whom he thought was dead. When he addressed her, she fled and he gave chase, only for her to tell him he was in her past and he should stay there. She then disappeared from London. As William faced the reality that both he and Simon had been lied to by their mother regarding Sophia's demise, he was uncertain as to whether or not he would ever forgive her. He also had to determine what his next move was in regards to Sophia and a possible future for them. William followed Sophia to her aunt's home where they both confronted the truths of their separation, both realizing the depth of his mother's deception to each of them. There was so much grief, angst, drama, and anger in this book. But there was also prejudice and loathing that was shocking to a certain degree. For someone who had been in love with their spouse and had believed in love to force a couple who were just as in love apart was hard to read about. The story also had a bit of humor that alleviated the tension, but it definitely needed more. The twists and turns were surprising at times. The storyline was well-written and the plot was a bit unusual but interesting. The characters were well-developed and fleshed out, with a maturity and integrity normally lacking in such books. The novel earned a five-star rating and a place amongst the Keeper for the Shelves collection.
