Someone to Love, Book 1 of the Wescott series, was about Miss Anna Snow, an orphan and never-before-heard-of daughter of the late Lord Humphrey Westcott, the Earl of Riverdale, and His Grace Avery Archer, the Duke of Netherby. Anna, aka Lady Anastasia Westcott, had been placed in an orphanage at the young age of 4 and had spent the next 21 years in that place. When she received a summons to London to the law offices of Brumford, Brumford & Sons, she was curious what it could mean. Then, still uncertain as to why she was being involved with any particular solicitor, was then summoned to a meeting at the home of Aver, the Duke of Netherby, where she was informed she was the legitimate daughter of the late Earl of Riverdale. Upon learning she had family, Anna only wanted to get to know them, not anger them, though they did not seem disposed to know her in return. Avery, being a tad shorter than many of his peers, and since his name had an almost feminine hint to it, had been bullied from an early age and he learned to keep people at arm's length for most of his life. However, there was something about Anna that drew him to her side repeatedly. Avery didn't know what to make of the emotions being near her created in him. As for Anna, she couldn't decide if she liked him or not since he caused a myriad of never-before-felt emotions in her. So they both tended to avoid being around the other. Life greatly changed for Anna after learning of her heritage, and she tried hard to embrace the new life before her without losing the old life, her old self, in the process. It was not easy with her newly-found family trying to control every aspect of her daily routine. Avery frequently aided her, but that was often hit-or-miss assistance. The angst and drama were mild, but at the same time quite appropriate for this story. Neither Avery nor Anna could deny that, from the moment they met, there was a deep connection between them; chemistry that could not be denied, though neither wanted to speculate on it. Anna had a lot of anxiety because of how drastically her life had changed, but she had a maturity about her that most 25-year-olds lack. There were quite a few twists and turns in the story, but it was riveting...even though at times there was a bit of fluff that could have been left out. The story made a slow meander from beginning to end, much like a lazy stroll through a garden. It wasn't unpleasant though. It had a slow mellow feel to the whole thing, aided in some way by the mere character of Avery. Although he was British, he had the inner peace one would expect to find in...well, think of the original movie, "the Karate Kid" and see how Mr. Miyagi and how calm he was. That same peaceful attitude could be used to describe Avery in so many ways...calm, yet with a hint of danger about him should he be provoked. It lent an air of mystique to the story. As good as the book was it deserves, perhaps not a five-star, but definitely no less than a four-star rating. The only reason for the demoting in rank would be all the fluff thrown in. Otherwise, it was a very good book.
