Adam Rutledge, Viscount d’Arque, really rather loathes Christmas. The banal cheerfulness. The asinine party games. And, worst of all, the obligatory trip to the countryside. His grandmother, however, loves the holiday—and Adam loves his grandmother, so he’ll brave the fiercest snowstorm to please her. But when their carriage wheel snaps, they’re forced to seek shelter at the home of the most maddening, infuriating, and utterly beguiling woman he’s ever met.

Sarah St. John really rather loathes rakes. The self-satisfied smirks. The sly predatory gazes. Oh, and the constant witty banter rife with double meaning. But in the spirit of the season, she’ll welcome this admittedly handsome viscount into her home. But as the snowstorm rages, the Yule log crackles, and the tension rises, Sarah and Adam find themselves locked in a fiery, passionate kiss. If love is the true meaning of Christmas, it’s the one gift this mismatched pair can’t wait to unwrap.

Once Upon a Christmas Eve, Book 10.7 of the Maiden Lane series, was about Lord Adam Rutledge, Viscount d’Arque, and Miss Sarah St. John, half-sister of Godric St. John. Adam hated the Christmas season and the countryside. He was willing to endure it for the sake of his grandmother, whom he loved. On the way to spend the holiday with a friend of his grandmother's, their carriage broke an axle and a wheel during a snowstorm. Having to leave her behind long enough to seek help, Adam found himself at the home of Godric St. John, a man who detested him for flirting with his wife...and also the man's half-sister, Sarah, whom he had met on a previous occasion and who had taken a decided disliking to him. With the only concern for his grandmother, Adam asked for their assistance, which they gave without grudge. Upon learning that his grandmother would be too ill to travel for a certain length of time due to her health, Adam settled in for what he believed would be a trying time, for he realized he was enthralled with Sarah, a woman who did not seem to return his feelings. Sarah, having been hurt in the past by a known rake, had taken a dislike to such gentlemen, and that included Adam for she was aware of his past overtures towards her sister-in-law. However, she could not shake the feelings of attraction she felt for him. The more time Adam and Sarah spent together, the closer they became, but Adam wasn't certain just what it was he wanted from her, and Sarah wanted nothing less than a husband. The attraction between them could not be denied, though, and they found it harder to stay away from each other with each passing day. While this was a short novella, it had the impact of a full-length novel. The angst and drama, though mild, were well woven into the story. There was a touch of humor interlaced within each chapter that lifted the spirits and eased the tension of the drama that played out. The characters were well-developed and each had an integrity and maturity that only strengthened the storyline. This book definitely earned a five-star rating and a place with the Keeper for the Shelves collection.
