October Revenge, Book 6 of The Silver Foxes of Westminster, was about Lord Mark Pearson, Earl of Gatwick, cousin of Lord Armand Pearson, Viscount Helm, and Miss Angelica LeClair (the above blurb said her name was Angelique, but for the entire book she was called Angelica) from Louisiana. Before I continue with this review, I have to admit that, by the time I reached this book, I was thoroughly exhausted with not only the subject matter but also with the entire cast of characters. I don't think I've read any other series that gave me such disgust as this one. This series should have ended six books earlier than it did. Unfortunately, the author felt that many of the minor characters needed their own stories but, for me, those were just distractions that should have been left out. Angelica arrived from New Orleans to inform Mark that his great-uncle Miles Gatwick had died and had willed her to him as a wife. If Angelica didn't marry him, according to the will, she would lose all the businesses the man had owned in America and Mark would lose his home as well since his great-uncle had apparently purchased the estate from Mark's father years before. After verifying the validity of the will and all it claimed, Mark's attorney not only sent him back the papers proving them accurate, he also sent a special license so the two could marry, which they did. However, Mark had so many secrets and emotional scars from his time in Shayle's shadow that it was difficult for him to relate to Angelica. And then, not long after the wedding, Mark received a letter from Shayles demanding he showed up at the prison to visit him before he was to be released. Due to the nature of the storyline, the angst and drama were off the charts. There was no humor to alleviate the tension and most of the subject matter was enough to turn the stomach of the reader. While the passion was hot, it was few and far between, with more fear, anger, self-pity, and other negative emotions swamping everything good. Mark's character was, at best, weak, but it came from more than 25 years of being beaten down by Shayles and his gang. While the author didn't reveal everything he had endured (thankfully!), she revealed enough that bile rose up repeatedly and was difficult to swallow. Angelica was a strong, American woman who had to learn to defend herself at an early age to prevent men from doing to her what Shayles did to all the women who worked for him. While it was a decent story, it had enough problems that I just can't give it a five-star rating. When people are such bullies, and I don't just mean Shayles, but also all the other main male characters from the previous books, it made for a bad read.
