Never Doubt a DukeNever Doubt a Duke, Book 1 of the Fortune's Brides series, was about Mrs. Jane Kimball, widow of Mr. James Kimball, and His Grace Alaric Dryden, the Duke of Wey, a widower. Jane, having come out of mourning for her husband, had to find employment in order to provide for herself. With the aid of Miss Thorn of the Fortune Employment Agency, she managed to secure a position as governess for the Duke of Wey's three small daughters. Alaric had his hands full being a single parent to three young daughters whose late mother never let him have a hand in raising. According to his late wife, it was the man's job to raise sons, but it was the wife's job to raise daughters. So, when his wife died, Alaric had no idea how to relate to his girls. Having gone through several governesses in a short amount of time, he feared he wouldn't be able to secure one who could do right by his children...until Jane came along. There was a lot of angst, drama, and a bit of mystery involved in this story...enough to keep the reader wondering what would happen next. The twists and turns were sometimes comical, but most of the time they kept the heart of the reader pounding in anticipation. All of the characters were, from youngest to oldest, very well-developed and fleshed out. The author had all the ranges of emotions a young girl would experience, to the very adult emotions the grown-ups would feel. There was even enough humor to smooth out any rough patches that the angst and drama might have caused. This book definitely earned a five-star rating and a place with the Keeper for the Shelves collection.
