Never Disrespect a Governess, Book 5 of The Neverhartts series, was about Lord Damon Neverhartt, the Earl of Seville, and Miss Alexandra "Alex" Matthews, daughter of the late Baron Fitzwilliam Matthews, and governess to the Duke and Duchess of Graystone's children. At the young age of 13, Damon had inherited the title of the Earl of Seville when both of his selfish and uncaring parents had died within days of each other from an unknown illness they had contracted on one of their many travels, leaving him and his four elder sisters to figure out how to fend for themselves without the money or any idea of how to survive. With no other options, Damon's eldest sister, Billie was forced to marry a vile, cruel, and much older man in order to provide a home and financial stability for the five of them. When Billie's new husband, the Duke of Graystone, died on their wedding night, it left them once again in peril of being homeless and destitute. Fortunately for them all, Zachary Ward, the new Duke of Graystone, fell in love with and married Billie, thus providing not only financial stability, love, and a home, it also gave Damon the ability to attend school and the mentor he would need to gain the knowledge and wherewithal to restore his family's home, name, and honor. Twelve years later... After Alex's father died, everything he owned went to a second cousin who refused to support her, forcing her to leave the only home she ever knew. Armed with only a letter of reference from Viscountess Giffard, Alex arrived at the door of the Duke and Duchess of Graystone, hoping to be accepted for the position of governess to their children. Billie, the Duchess, having once been in a similar situation to Alex's, decided to give her the position on a trial basis with the potential for it to become permanent. Alex was determined to prove herself capable enough for it to do so. On his return to Grayston Castle, after his world tour came to an end, Damon encountered Alex on the road into the village, a mere week after she had been hired. They struck up a conversation, and both liked what they learned about the other. However, Alex mistook Damon for a commoner looking for employment...and he failed to correct her assumptions, although he never truly lied about his identity, other than by omission. The only thing he told her was that he didn't need employment on the Duke's estate. A month into her employment, Alex was settling into her position, which had become a permanent one. She had become quite fond of the twins, Alistaire and Benedict, and was also enjoying her blossoming friendship with Damon. I have to admit, it was...strange reading about Damon's life and things from his perspective. He never made an appearance in any of the other books, other than to have his name mentioned. However, he was always there, in the background as a child earl, so to read about him as a grown man was a tad uncomfortable or inappropriate. Not that it makes much sense, but there it is. When the twins innocently revealed their Uncle Damon's identity in front of Alex, she was mad as a wet hen at his duplicity. The results of that anger were, for want of a better word, comical. This story was definitely better than the others in the series. It had less angst and drama, but it had more chemistry and humor too. It also gave Damon and Alex more time to develop their relationship, although the author didn't reveal it all in words. While it was a better story, it still only garnered a four-star rating and won't be added to the Keeper for the Shelves collection, but only because it still needed a firmer foundation for the storyline. It was a bit weak. If the author had drawn it out 2-3 more chapters and provided a little more background for the characters, or even more foreground. Either way, the story needed more bolstering than it had.
