Vengeance with a side of seduction!

Morgan, the Marquess of Searle, was presumed dead after a betrayal that nearly cost him his life and saw him detained and tortured by Napoleon’s forces. Now, he’s back in London, scarred and bitter, and hell-bent on vengeance against the man responsible. He doesn’t care if it means destroying an innocent in the process.
Lady Leonora Forsythe is content to lead the quiet life of a spinster. At nine-and-twenty, she’s suffered enough awkward seasons to know she wants nothing more than to find a husband and make a family of her own. When the wickedly handsome Marquess of Searle ruins her, she’s certain he harbors ulterior motives. After all, no man would want an opinionated bluestocking with a deformed ankle as his wife…
Would he?
Morgan never imagined he’d become captivated by Leonora’s keen wit, striking beauty, and gentle kindness. But the more he uses her to gain his revenge on her brother, the more he finds himself drawn to her. Soon, reprisal is the last thing on his mind.
Will he abandon his plans and give Leonora his heart? Or will he give in to the darkness and destroy her love in the name of retribution?

Marquess of Mayhem, Book 3 of the Sins and Scoundrels series, was about Lord Morgan (once again, no surname given), the Marquess of Searle, and Lady Leonora Forsythe, the daughter of the late Earl of Rayne, half-sister t the current Earl of Rayne. Side note: There was one major issue with this book. According to the last book "Prince of Persuasion", Leonora was 26 in 1812. The blurb for this book said she was 29 in 1812. Morgan, having suffered great atrocities when he spent several years as a prisoner of war, managed to free himself and return to London. Determined to avenge himself against the Earl of Rayne, the man he held responsible for his imprisonment, he managed to ruin Leonora, the man's half-sister, in order to force the man out into the public so he could further his revenge against him. Believing there was more to their marriage than what Morgan was revealing, Leonora set about to make life as tenable as possible. However, things were rough from the start and did not seem to get better any time soon. Leonora realized she was in for a rough marriage with Morgan. The characters were well-developed and fleshed out if a bit...sad. Morgan, stuck in the memories and nightmares of his time imprisoned, wants just one thing...revenge. His mind had been warped by all the brutality he experienced at the hands of his jailers. Leonora was just shy of being a milksop because she was just too likable. I mean, honestly, no one is that sweet and willing to be used and abused as she was. She had little to no backbone for most of the book. The storyline was a bit boring and barely held my attention. It took longer to read because I kept putting it down because something else drew my attention. I don't normally do that with a good book, but this one just wasn't that entertaining. There was a great deal of angst and drama...or perhaps it was just too melodramatic, for it definitely leaned more towards whining than actual drama. I got the old, "boo hoo! Someone stepped on my toe and now I have to avenge myself" idea from all that took place and it was aggravating. There was only a small touch of humor to help ease the tension. The romance and passion, while present throughout the story, was not enough to save the book from creating the doldrums in the reader. Definitely not worthy of a five-star rating.
