James’s Lady, Book 5 of the Regency Club Venus series, was about Lord James Metford, the Earl of Ipswich, and Lady Beatrix Winter, sister to Doctor Lord Benedict Winter. Beatrix had been in self-imposed seclusion for nearly ten years due to scars she had received during a carriage accident that had claimed the lives of her parents. She refused to enter Society for fear of how they would react to those scars. In fact, she had been so long out of Society that most people believed she had died along with her parents. James, having spent the same ten years hiding in St. Giles from an uncle who had tried to have him murdered, met and fell in love with Beatrix while at her brother's home as he recuperated from an assault he had suffered the previous month. After having successfully reclaimed his title and home, James, aware of, but not bothered by, returned to Beatrix in hopes of convincing her to marry him, only to have her turn him down. After having rejected James' proposal, Beatrix, believing her scars made her unworthy of a gentleman's love, was determined to force herself into Society in order to be worthy of his love. She wanted him to be able to tell the world how proud he was to have her for his wife. With the two of them at odds, each trying to prove their love to the other in such a way that it actually looked quite the opposite, desperate measures were taken to bring things to their final culmination...whether the outcome was positive or negative. Though the story was short, it was full of angst and drama, a touch of humor, chemistry, and passion. There were a few twists and turns, hurt feelings, and finally a HEA. The characters, having been mentioned in several previous stories, were well developed and fleshed out, both having gone through traumatic pasts and struggling with their present lives. Worthy of a four-star rating.
